Press Release From the Office of the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives
July 22, 2026
Clarification on Report of N1bn in 2026 Budget for Musical Instruments in Bende Churches
...Over 130 churches to receive N5m to 6m each as support
The attention of the Office of the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives and member representating Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR has been drawn to media reports suggesting that N1 billion was inserted in the 2026 budget solely for the procurement of musical instruments for churches in Bende.
We wish to clarify that this is a misrepresentation of the intent and scope of the provision.
The proposed allocation is actually N780 million after VAT and other tax deductions.
It is earmarked as a Youth Re-orientation and Social Support Programmes delivered evangelistically through faith-based organizations in Bende federal constituency of Abia State. Bende has 13 federal political/electoral wards and over 200 churches. The first phase of this support targets 130 of these churches averaging about 10 churches per ward, which amounts to approximately 5 to 6 million Naira per church. It is designed to equip churches to expand existing youth engagement platforms focused on character reform, and to deliver more impactful community outreaches.
The funds are intended to support the purchase of evangelical instruments and public address systems to promote campaigns against vices like the spread of narcotics, sexual offences, violent crimes while instilling discipline, values, peace, and character development among young people in the communities.
Nation-building must go beyond roads and physical infrastructure. Government must also invest in building the character and value system of the people who use the infrastructure using various value delivery platforms. Government is also employing non-kinetic approaches to promote peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.
It should also be noted that traditional institutions are actively playing their part in value formation. This is precisely why government, through its representatives, has consistently supported them with town halls and other community engagement centers to serve as hubs for the preservation and sustenance of the cultural values.
This emphasizes that faith-based organizations have a critical role to play in sustaining good norms and values in the society.
This development is not entirely new or strange. Faith based organizations in other parts of the country invest in youth development but it is a strategy that has not gained currency in the South East region. The provision therefore, seeks to adopt, strengthen and support the effort in Bende federal constituency, using the church platforms.
For the avoidance of doubt, the 2026 budget where this is domiciled is yet to be implemented. The selected churches will receive notification once the procurement processes have been concluded.
At the moment, the country is still operating on the 2024 and 2025 budgets. The 2026 budget is yet to be funded. It is yet to receive releases, which must take place before the commencement of procurement.
Similarly, we have also identified a technical error in the procurement description. A letter of corrigendum to this effect has been initiated for the needed correction by the budget office through the appropriation committee before implementation.
This intervention is not about instruments alone. It is about leveraging trusted community values sustaining structures to reorient our youths, promote unity, and sustain moral instruction across the constituency
We urge the media and the public to disregard sensational reports and to support efforts aimed at building both infrastructure and character in our society.

This man was suspended today by Abia State University.
Investigations so far have revealed that he has been involved in grade sorting and other strange activities. He charges as high as N1.5m to pass MBBS exam.
The Abia State Government has intensified its investigation and is reviewing results and mark sheets for all students in the Uni for the past 5 years.
Some graduates' results may be cancelled after this investigation.
This is the most thorough academic investigation at any Nigerian university so far.
I've spent the last several months researching, travelling, and studying why countries like Singapore, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Canada and Finland built some of the world's best public education systems.
One thing became clear:
Nigeria doesn't just have an education problem. We have a school management problem.
Today, I'm releasing a white paper that proposes a new way to transform our public schools, keeping them publicly owned while introducing world-class management and accountability.
This isn't about politics.
It's about giving every Nigerian child the opportunity to attend a world-class public school.
I hope this sparks one of the most important conversations our country has had about education.
Read it. Criticise it. Improve it. Share it.
If we get education right, we change Nigeria.

Apc data rats at it again, just listen to yourself,a terrorist on handcuffs overpowered the military personnel and assembled a gun and blew himself up.
The enemies within our security architecture
Above ๐๐is L/Cpl Jibrin, an instructor with his Army Battalion in Geidam, who disappeared for about 2 days. He was very popular with his colleagues and well liked by his colleagues because of his known competence.
He was however sighted among the Boko Haram Terrorists, that attacked Geidam last Sunday. The Battalion CO tracked his phone and he was pinpointed at a point in Gashua, hundreds of kilometers from his supposed duty post.
The Army authorities in Gashua was intimated and the soldiers spread their dragnets. Yesterday, Tuesday morning, L/Cpl Jibrin boarded a bus to Gombe and disguised himself but was identified and nabbed at the checkpoint in Gashua.
He was handcuffed and on interrogation revealed so many things. On transit to Geidam, Jibrin deployed his skills as a weapon instructor, snatched a gun from one of his escorts, over powered the other and blew himself up. His revelations however led to the arrest of some of his terror-brethren, while many are believed to be among the troops in both Gombe and Geidam Battalions.
Real problems already reside with and among our defenders and our military faces a lot of internal threats. This was the end of a brilliant soldier who was an asset to the Army until he got switched. He was even in the Intelligence Corps of the NA before becoming a weapons instructor. L/Cpl Jibrin was a Babur from Biu .
๐May God continue to protect our troops.

Reflections on My 65th Birthday
Today, July 19, 2026, marks my 65th birthday. At sixty-five, birthdays should naturally become moments of deep reflection - moments to look back with gratitude to Almighty God for His abundant graces, examine the journey so far, and ask how the remaining years can be devoted more meaningfully to the service of God and humanity.
Perhaps in countries where basic human needs have largely been met, where institutions function effectively, and where citizens enjoy a greater measure of security and dignity, such attainments may rightly call for elaborate celebrations. In Nigeria, however, our reality compels a different kind of reflection.
Our nation is blessed with enormous human and natural resources, yet millions of our people continue to struggle with challenges that demand our collective attention. We cannot afford to celebrate ourselves excessively while many around us are burdened by poverty, ill health, unemployment, and limited opportunities. Rather, occasions such as this should remind us of our responsibility to contribute towards building a nation where future generations can genuinely celebrate.
This is why I have always seen birthdays not merely as occasions for personal celebration, but as opportunities for sober reflection, thanksgiving, and a renewed commitment to service.
As I reflected today, I came to a simple conclusion: the greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we can touch positively.
This conviction has guided my approach throughout my years in business, in the corporate world, and as Governor of Anambra State. In each of these roles, I have tried to see every privilege not as a personal entitlement but as an opportunity to improve the lives of others.
Whenever people or institutions sought to celebrate me with expensive gifts or elaborate ceremonies, I encouraged them instead to redirect those resources towards projects that would have a lasting impact. Over the years, this philosophy has resulted in the building of schools, hostel blocks, support to schools, and other facilities that continue to benefit the less privileged. I have always believed that resources meant for personal comfort can often be transformed into instruments of hope for many.
The greatest honour anyone can receive is not found in gifts, ceremonies, or public admiration, but in knowing that oneโs life has contributed, however modestly, to making another personโs life better.
Today, therefore, I give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of life and for bringing me to this important milestone of 65 years. I began the day with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, thanking God for His grace, protection, guidance, and the countless blessings He has bestowed upon me over the years.
After the Mass, I proceeded to St. Raphaelโs Hospital, Umueri, a small rural hospital in Anambra East Local Government Area. In furtherance of my belief that birthdays should be occasions for service rather than self-indulgence, I donated the sum of โฆ10 million to support the hospitalโs work of providing quality healthcare to the people.
As I was conducted around the hospital and saw patients in their moments of vulnerability, I was reminded again of our shared humanity. Some of those receiving care may not even have the financial means to settle their hospital bills, yet they deserve compassion, dignity, and access to quality healthcare. Their condition was a reminder that leadership, in its truest form, is about caring for people, especially those who cannot repay our kindness.
Hospitals and schools remain two of the greatest investments any society can make. A hospital preserves life; a school shapes the future. Supporting both is, therefore, not just an act of charity - it is an investment in humanity and in the future of our nation.
