Homing pigeons orient themselves by the Sun’s position under sunny skies and rely on their magnetic sense when it is cloudy.

Under overcast conditions, homing pigeons with their normal liver macrophages had little issue flying a 19-kilometer route for which they had been trained.

When injected with clodronate liposomes that knocked out the liver macrophages, the pigeons could navigate the route without issue when it was sunny.

Under overcast skies, however, homing pigeons with depleted liver macrophages struggled mightily to find their way home—suggesting the immune cells play a role in the birds’ magnetic sense.

Venus' flower basket (Euplectella aspergillum), a type of glass sponge found in the deep sea....

Glass sponges are one of the longest-living animals on the planet, estimated to have a lifespan of 15,000 years.

Glass sponges, members of the class Hexactinellida, are among the oldest and most unusual animals on Earth. Unlike most sponges, their skeletons are made of silica, forming intricate, glass-like lattices that can survive for thousands of years. These deep-sea organisms are typically found at depths ranging from 200 to over 6,000 meters and grow extremely slowly, often only a few centimeters per year.

Scientists estimate that some species, particularly those found in the deep Pacific Ocean, can live for more than 10,000 years, with certain specimens potentially reaching 15,000 years of age. Their remarkable longevity is attributed to the stable conditions of the deep ocean, including low temperatures, minimal light, and limited predation.

Glass sponges also possess a unique biological feature: they can transmit electrical impulses throughout their bodies, a capability rare among animals lacking a nervous system.

During the Jurassic Period, roughly 200 to 145 million years ago, reefs built by glass sponges covered vast areas of the ancient oceans, and some fossilized glass sponge reefs discovered off the coast of British Columbia are estimated to be over 9,000 years old.

Beautiful blue glass beads from the Danish Bronze Age.

Found by a farmer at Humlum in Denmark in 1885. Glass analysis published in 2015 shows the beads originated in Mesopotamia indicating far-reaching trade networks some 3,000 years ago.
