Sidney Coleman (1937–2007), Harvard theorist. Best known for the Coleman–Mandula theorem, false vacuum decay, and the Coleman–Weinberg mechanism. Also famously nocturnal, chain-smoking, and a better explainer than almost anyone in the field.

His Physics 253 lectures at Harvard are the legendary QFT course. The 1975–76 sessions were filmed and are on YouTube; the notes circulated as samizdat for decades. Bryan Gin-ge Chen and colleagues turned them into Lectures of Sidney Coleman on Quantum Field Theory (World Scientific, 2018). Sharp, canonical-quantization-first, and full of jokes that land.

Sidney Coleman's Harvard lectures were legendary for their clarity and depth, and many were later circulated as influential lecture notes in high-energy physics.

Coleman made fundamental contributions to the theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking, instantons, and the Coleman–Mandula theorem (with Jeffrey Mandula), which restricts possible symmetries of particle interactions.
