USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.
Got some sweet, sweet swag from @yallweekly and it was "hand" delivered by the cutest robot from #tinymile! If you haven't subscribed to #yallweekly you're missing out and need to get on that now!
I'm eager to start collaborating daily with @nopantski@lutztalk@angerica00 @mrjaimisra and others at Cloverhound, learn from them and help them where I can. The team is amazing and together I'm positive that we will reach our goals.
@AmericanAir srsly, I just want to get home. I have spent hundreds of dollars on @lyft going from IAD to DCA to BWI, on a hotel when my flight was canceled last night, food at airports bc your AA lounge I PAY FOR are closed or in other terminals from your gates. #getmetheFhome
@AmericanAir If this is your best then I'd hate to see your staffing and logistics on a bad day @AmericanAir -- I will have been to every airport in the DC area to try to get home in less than 24 hours. Unacceptable and expensive.
@AmericanAir my flights from DC to CLT have been cancelled twice, delayed several times.. I just want to get home to my family and enjoy what was supposed to be a long holiday weekend. Instead I'm paying for extra hotels, food, and most importantly..my time.
My flights have moved from IAD to DCA to BWI and cost hundreds in Lyft rides to get me to these airports only to be met with delays, cancellations, and your poor exhausted AA workers.
@CLTgov I'm going to need someone to fix the ungodly crater sized pothole plaguing innocent drivers on NC16 southbound. A hole worthy of the Asian corner mall. The kids in the van next to me heard every expletive I screamed after hitting this canyon of a pothole. #thinkofthekids
Working on larger initiatives within the organization is a pleasant change after almost 8 years of rise and grind. Leadership from folks like @nopantski@angerica00 and @kevinparrett@lutztalk and others really helping us get to the next level.
