Reflections and Lessons We’ve Learned Through the @llamao_ Launch
The Llamao launch days were exhausting and overwhelming for our team, not only because of the intense preparation but also due to the continuously unexpected challenges that arose.
To summarize: Llamao went through a price cut from 1200 $MON to 500 $MON (we refunded 700 $MON to those who minted at 1200 $MON), and a supply cut from 5000 NFTs to 1200 NFTs. We’ve been building Llamao for almost two years with genuine love and dedication to the Llamao IP. Below are some reflections and lessons we’ve learned:
1. Price & Supply
Our initial mint price and supply were based on subjective self-valuation using data such as testnet NFTs, GTD WL holders, Monad airdrop claimers, Monad overall sentiment, etc. However, market conditions changed rapidly, making that valuation less accurate.
One key challenge was that pricing was tied directly to MON.
- When MON rises, supporters feel the mint price becomes too expensive.
- When MON falls, the team’s financial planning is impacted.
Lesson learned: We should announce price and supply much earlier, giving the community enough time to absorb the information and provide timely feedback. The team also needs sufficient time to collect feedback and make adjustments. For Llamao, we announced too late (because we were worried about MON volatility), which made the timeline too rushed and left little room to gather feedback. Fortunately, we still managed to adjust the price and supply in time.
2. WL Distribution Strategy
Our strategy was to distribute WL not only within Monad, but also beyond Monad, to well-known NFT and DAO communities across Web3. However, this led to a problem. Because the number of GTD WL holders was high, we felt pressure to maintain a large supply to ensure their minting opportunities. Ideally, we should have followed a stricter WL strategy or conducted a large role purge earlier to determine the realistic supply. Onboarding non-Monad communities was also challenging. We had to convince them about both Monad and Llamao.
3. Timing
Launching on day 2 of Monad mainnet was not ideal timing. Most CEXs had disabled MON withdrawals. To get MON to participate in the ecosystem, users had to perform complicated steps like bridging from Solana. This significantly limited the real liquidity available for the NFT ecosystem. We should have delayed the launch until MON was easier to access. I personally struggled to get MON at that time.
We’ve been building Llamao for almost 2 years entirely with personal funds. We never raised from VCs. The truth is, the amount we received from minting is nothing compared to what we’ve actually spent. This shows how much we genuinely love and believe in the Llamao IP. There’s still a long path ahead, with more plans to develop it further. It will require time, trust, and support.
We’ll share more about the next steps next week. For now, the Llamao team needs a few days to deeply rest, recover, and come back stronger than ever. You’ve seen how hard we’ve tried, right? And we’ll continue that way 💜
More importantly, we want to send a heartfelt thank you and appreciation to @KeoneHD for what he did. It was unexpected, almost like a dream. The most beautiful part is that it feels like a recognition of the effort we’ve dedicated to Monad. I know Keone will change his PFP, but the day he chose Llamao as his first Monad-based PFP will never be forgotten. You are a GOAT.
One more happy thing: everyone who believed in us and hit the mint button is now in profit. You deserve it. Once again, thank you so much for trusting and supporting us. You choose to stay with us 💜
For those who are currently holding Llamao NFTs: please don’t overhype. Instead, take the time to learn about Llamao & Llamaoism. We’ll start RTing old posts for you to learn from. Thanks so much for trusting us and holding 💜
A message to those who truly wish to own a @llamao_ NFT
If you’re minting NFTs at this stage, choose projects that are committed to building for years until they truly take off.
This world will always be in constant flux and fundamentally unpredictable. If you expect stability, you’re essentially going against how nature works. That’s exactly why the philosophy of Llamaoism was born.
And that’s why Llamao has never been afraid of the negativity over the past few weeks. Llamao was created to survive the bear and make it to the next bull, and yes, it will come. We’re already prepared to keep building for years. You just need enough patience to get there.
Llamao Team Journey
I wanna share a bit about the journey of the Llamao Team.
Back in 2020, @johunvn and I joined the market together. We started by building a Vietnamese crypto community focused on sharing knowledge and bringing Solana’s community culture to Vietnam (Solana was extremely early back then, with only SPL wallets and the Serum DEX). Later, we were lucky to meet @AngiePyra, a talented core team member who has stayed with us ever since. From there, we decided to pivot our community into a fully NFT-focused one thanks to the 2021-2022 NFT wave.
As a result, 3 of us gained experience in building an NFT community. At the same time, we were running a marketing agency, helping web3 projects with community building and creating GTM plans to enter the Vietnamese market. Working with major Solana clients back then taught us a lot: how to build a team, narrative building, marketing execution, GTM strategy, and what it really takes to grow a strong web3 project.
Later, we launched our own NFT collection for our community. Our goal was already the same as it is now: to build a globally recognized web3 IP brand. We were lucky to get support from the top 1 ecosystem in Vietnam. But choosing Polygon instead of Solana turned out to be a big mistake. It limited our global reach when no one actually cared about NFTs on Polygon at the time. So we accepted that the project would remain local and focused on building membership-style utilities like WL collabs, private alpha, private investment opportunities, and more, similar to an Alpha DAO. Thankfully, the market was easier back then, and with our network and experience, we were still able to bring great value to our holders.
Deep down, we always kept the dream of building a global web3 IP brand, something with real products and real-world impact. That’s how @llamao_ was born. After the pain of choosing the wrong chain, we became much more careful. We passed on Aptos, SUI, Sei, Berachain, and most ETH L2s (I’m sure you remember the Blast wave). When we finally dug into Monad, we were fully convinced. Its community culture reminded us of Solana’s early days. Then we gradually found the rest of our team members: @arnldngo@Bloc_ko55@gelutt9@UnyilLNB @Emma0x5h @sunking85735@_0xyung_@jasonphan_real
From day one, we focused on being different. We gave Llamao the iconic cross-eye look and built the lore and character content you see today. Then came Llamaoism, a philosophy that shapes our entire thesis. In Vietnam, most people grow up around Buddhism, and I personally believe in logical Buddhism ( @Naval is also a follower ). Those principles inspired us to create Llamaoism.
It’s something that helped us survive the ups and downs of this market, especially with investing. To invest well, emotional control matters far more than pure investment knowledge. You can enter private rounds at amazing prices, but if greed takes over, you can still lose. If you panic too easily, you’ll also lose. That’s how many people end up leaving the market in frustration. Llamaoism was created to bring real social value, not just a shiny narrative.
From Llamaoism, we started shaping a long-term vision around the Wellness economy, especially mental health. The crypto market seriously lacks strong consumer apps, and through our research, we saw a big chance to find PMF not just through philosophy, but through product as well. The next phase is simple: focus completely on achieving PMF and creating real revenue. Only real revenue can generate real value for Llamao holders.
It’s been a long journey, almost two years of Llamao. We wouldn’t have reached this point without our early supporters. Thank you so much. Now it’s time for all of us to push together toward the most important launch.
See you all on 25th November
