I’m so frustrated I cannot even finish this X thread. Just hope it never ever happens to you because the system will make it worse on you. I promise you that much.
Here is the shocking truth about some of the clients I have supported with akathisia. I refer them out to medical services and what do you think they do? Misdiagnose, throw their hands up, suggest more meds, deny it’s drug-related & call it “anxiety.” I am so sick of it.
Not only is there no medical help for iatrogenic illness, there’s no supports. Except us coaches who have been through it, I guess. And then we get shit for working with people who have severe symptoms. Do you just want us to leave them alone and let them suffer?
The comments section here are full of medical professionals who have gone through antidepressant withdrawal themselves, worrying that people that haven't gone through it will never get it. That worries me as well: when clinicians have had their views calcified through years of teaching based on short-term industry studies if it takes personal experience to break out of that, we are cooked, as the kidz say.
I wrote a blog on "Why Doctors Don’t See Withdrawal:
Severe antidepressant withdrawal is often hidden in plain sight. Here's why most clinicians don't recognise it – and why I wouldn't have either until it happened to me." Link below. Please re-tweet.
I made $30,000 as a coach last year. I can only work 2 days a week & run 18 support groups per month because I am still healing from this shit myself. I could make more money working in the system with a license. I don’t do this for the money in case anyone was wondering.
@RecoveryDoctor@markhoro Even if the incidence of severe & protracted antidepressant withdrawal is 1%, isn't that enough to change clinical practice to avoid it? 1% of 10s of millions is still a lot of people.
@RecoveryDoctor@markhoro I share many patients that Mark has consulted with. We see some of the most injured patients there are. We both know there is a spectrum here. But just in the last 4 years, we have seen thousands (collectively) who are severely incapacitated & is likely the tip of the iceberg.
@RecoveryDoctor@markhoro@BadreNicolas@DavidJuurlink What do you mean by this truly? They’re not a large enough population to care about? To wonder about? To study? This population are only the ones smart enough to search for their drug name on social media. They are not the all.
@RecoveryDoctor@markhoro@BadreNicolas@DavidJuurlink Does proportion really matter? This is the echo of the lack of medical information and support for people who are deprescribing- either by choice or because it just kind of landed on them.
What happens when help hurts?
Join us tomorrow for a workshop exploring psychiatric drug withdrawal, iatrogenic injury, recovery, altered states, misdiagnosis, and alternative ways of understanding distress.
