Even a few lefties are mocking the comically bizarre academic idpol on display at Socialism 2026, the annual gathering of Haymarket Books and the ISO (which disbanded in order to infiltrate the DSA). A pantheon of Haymarket authors and ISO fellow travelers signed the now-notorious recent open letter denouncing international solidarity with Iran against the US-Israeli war as a form of "hollow anti-imperialism."

The international panels at Socialism 2026 kept the crypto-neocon spirit of that Iran letter alive. One panel featuring supporters of the CIA-run Ukraine proxy war was titled, "Russian Neofascism: Imperialism Abroad & Repression At Home." Another consisted of obscure academic figures who have pushed regime change in Russia, pre-Delcy Venezuela, China and Iran. These countries were portrayed in Socialism 2026 publicity material as "imperialist."

As The Grayzone reported in 2019, that year's "Socialism" conference featured a panel on China filled with anti-communist academics funded by the US government's National Endowment for Democracy. Another panel drummed up regime change in Nicaragua and Cuba. The Syrian government was also a consistent target of Haymarket/ISO, at least until a rebranded Al Qaeda outfit took power in Damascus.

If this is American socialism, capitalism has little to worry about.

Removing every shred of support from the genocidal apartheid state of Israel and, in turn, from anyone who supports the Israeli state is NOT a "purity test" or "making the perfect the enemy of the good."

There's no acceptable position other than unambiguously fighting to end this holocaust and the horrific occupation.

At a bare minimum, this means that elected officials claiming to be pro-Palestinian must not endorse Zionist politicians funding this holocaust.

It's an objective fact that most of the DSA-endorsed leaders fail to meet even this basic standard. History will not absolve them for this any more than those silent during the Nazi Holocaust. Those of us fighting against the horrors in Gaza and the West Bank cannot look the other way out of some false idea of "left unity."

A former CIA asset who promoted the destruction of Libya & genocidal anti-Palestinian propaganda is okay, but the leading critic of Canadian foreign policy should be cancelled. The reaction of a segment of the Canadian left to Gloria Steinem’s death highlights a glaring imperialist, anti-Palestinian, double standard.

In her twenties Steinem’s political work was funded by the CIA. In 2011 she aggressively hyped (dubious) sexual abuse claims used to justify NATO’s destruction of Libya and two months into the holocaust in Gaza she was lead signatory of a letter promoting Israel’s October 7 mass rape hoax. Fittingly, Steinem was a staunch supporter of aggressive imperialist Hillary Clinton, even smearing young women for supporting Bernie Sanders over Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primaries. Steinheim was photographed with Madeleine Albright, who infamously said killing a half a million Iraqi children was “worth it”, and received a presidential award from the murderous Barrack Obama.

Considering her alignment with liberal imperialism and Zionism, it’s unsurprising Steinheim was lauded on the front of Friday’s Globe and Mail, Wall Street Journal and New York Times (“Indefatigable feminist leader became symbol of the modern movement”, “Gloria Steinem, Feminist Trailblazer, Dies at 92” and “Her Voice, Pen and Vigor Lifted Countless Women”). Knowing the broad outlines of her liberal imperialism and Zionism, Matthew Behrens, Judy Rebick and a slew of other Canadian leftists have also lauded Steinem in recent days. For them her enabling of genocide and liberal imperialism is less important than her role advancing North American feminism. Political gains aren’t linear and individuals have complicated trajectories so there is a case to be made for celebrating Steinem from that standpoint. I’m not sympathetic to that argument, but at least it has some logic.

But when you contrast that argument to how these individuals relate to genuine leftists it exposes stark imperialist, genocidal, power serving, double standards. At a decisive moment, Rebick and Behrens cheer led attacks against me that enabled the reactionary NDP brass to exclude a dynamic anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist campaign from the party’s leadership race.

Among many attacks that aligned with efforts to suppress an activist campaign, Rebick and Behrens repeatedly labelled me “antisemitic”. In a https://t.co/LF1QGB5nCM discussion about the NDP leadership race Rebick suddenly attacked a campaign promoting an anti-capitalist and anti-colonial platform crafted by 45 activists and researchers. She complained, “Yves Engler’s people are trying to take over the chat which is annoying me no end. So just like cool it guys. You just convince us that it’s good he’s not on the platform by trying to take over the chat.” The unelected three person NDP vetting committee was justified in excluding an insurgent leftist campaign because some supporters posted in a chat!

When asked about my exclusion from the race, Rebick claimed, “Yves Engler is the most destructive person I’ve ever known on the left. Ok I’m saying that. The only time I’ve ever seen him in political practice is in disrupting a meeting or harassing a politician.”

For Rebick, Behrens and many other Canadian self-described socialists a CIA asset who supported the destruction of Libya and enabled the genocide in Gaza is okay. But a genuine internationalist and anti-imperialist campaign deserved to be shut down for “antisemitism”, Rwanda genocide denial, pro-Putinism, “harassment” or whatever other claim the mainstream media, NDP brass and its left backers made against a leadership candidate who was not their chosen one. Their double standards are obvious.

Gandhi is taught in Western schools for a reason.

Not because nonviolent resistance is the only thing that works. Because it is the only thing the system is comfortable including in its curriculum.

Teach Gandhi.

Don't teach the Mau Mau. Don't teach the FLN. Don't teach the Việt Minh.

Don't teach the conditions that made those movements inevitable, the specific brutalities that nonviolent petition had already failed to address for decades before people concluded that petitioning had a ceiling.

The lesson they want you to take from Gandhi is: change comes from asking politely with great moral dignity.

The lesson they don't want you to take from the full history is: the British left India because the empire was no longer sustainable, economically or militarily, after the Second World War, and the independence movements across the empire made continued colonial control more expensive than it was worth.

Gandhi mattered. Gandhi was extraordinary.

He was also operating within a specific set of historical conditions that made nonviolent resistance viable in ways it is not always viable.

The system teaches you the tactic without the conditions.

So you apply the tactic in conditions where it was never going to be enough.

And then it tells you that you failed because you didn't have Gandhi's moral purity.

Julian Assange published documents showing the gap between what Western governments said and what they did.

He spent years in an embassy and then a prison, and the country that lectures the world about press freedom led the effort to destroy him.

Meanwhile the people who lied about weapons of mass destruction and launched a war that killed hundreds of thousands:

They are on the speaking circuit.

They are on television as analysts.

They have libraries named after them.

This is not a paradox. This is the system working correctly.

Free speech, in the empire's operating definition, means you can say anything that doesn't threaten the machine.

If Anthony Housefather’s car was set ablaze, would it be linked to Palestine and antisemitism? Why is confirmed and probable Zionist violence treated differently? Should we also be pointing a figure at those inciting it?

In the middle of the night Wednesday Liberal MP Salma Zaid had her car set ablaze. Video shows a man pouring gasoline on five cars in her Scarborough driveway. He succeeds in burning two of them and runs off when the gas container catches fire. Reportedly, cars were also set ablaze near the MP’s house in 2024.

The prime minister and leader of the main opposition parties, as well as multiple Muslim organizations, expressed their solidarity with Zaid. Conspicuously, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, B'nai Brith and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center have stayed mum on the (probably) hate motivated arson. Ditto for Zaid’s ultra–Jewish supremacist Liberal colleague Anthony Housefather. In fact, I couldn’t find any comment on the matter from a mainstream Jewish Zionist organization.

An arson at the home of Canada’s first veiled MP, who has been the party’s most vocal critic of Israel’s genocide and apartheid, follows on the heels of an assault by a Jewish Zionist at a Palestine rally in Montreal. As I reported, Robert Moisecu shoved a camera into a photographer’s face, screamed slurs and uttered death threats against an Arab during a pro-Palestinian rally on Monday. More information has emerged about the scope of the former Israeli soldier’s criminal background. As late as last year Moisecu was caught robbing a restaurant and in 2015 he killed a British tourist in Tel Aviv with a fatal dose of fentanyl.

In a violent, racist, Substack post boasting about his actions Monday Moisecu admits, “Yes.. I was a terrible human being. I killed.. robbed.. assaulted.. used narcotics.. smoked.. fucked and drank my way through life.. everyone has their idiosyncrasies. Believe it or not.. I have changed.”

In “‘Bad’ Jews like me... won't stay silent” Moisecu utters multiple threats and concludes, “We are at war. we are active combatants whether you know it or not. Trotsky once said, ‘You may not be interested in war, but war may be interested in you.’ Arm the fuck up.”

At the bottom of a commentary noting “I may as well use my innate predisposition to kinetic conflict resolution in the defense of western civilization”, Moisecu includes two posts with my name marked prominently and another with a photo of Toronto journalist Samira Mohyeddin.
Moisecu followed up his Substack rant with another post explicitly threatening to attack the next pro-Palestinian demonstration in Montreal.

(After popular outrage online, the Montreal police announced that their hate crimes unit was investigating his actions at the Monday rally. They haven’t, however, arrested Moisecu despite his threats. In contrast, the Montreal police jailed me for five days in a failed bid to impose onerous conditions regarding a charge they ultimately dropped.)

Local Jewish organizations, fighting in IOF, family living in illegal Israeli settlement, etc. likely radicalized Moisecu. More specifically, three days before the Montreal city council vote, former Conservative party candidate Neil Oberman released a video calling on Zionists to “go down there … [to show] we reject your impairment, we reject your sickness.” Montreal’s leading Zionist lawfare activist angrily added “take back our city, take back our province, take back our country, take back your dignity.”

Did Oberman’s word influence Moisecu?

Similarly, was the person responsible for the arson at Zaid’s home influenced by the violent rhetoric coming from the newly created Jewish Defence Force? The former head of the fascistic Jewish Defence League, Meir Weinstein, recently set up a Toronto organization named after the genocidal Israeli Defence Force.

Israel supporters’ response about the arson at a Liberal MP’s house and Robert Moisecu’s attack is deafening in its silence.

Authoritarian Jewish supremacists are crowing about cancelling a talk about the US empire. With Israel killing 11 human beings in Lebanon Saturday and a minister demanding 30+ be killed in Gaza daily, a ‘peace-minded’ Toronto Jewish restaurant owner bolstered her community’s most fervent authoritarian, genocidal supremacists. And she will no doubt feel like a ‘liberal’ for assisting in securing an alternative venue.

On Tuesday lawyer and journalist Dimitri Lascaris was scheduled to speak on “The Imminent Decline and Fall of the American Empire”. Late Saturday the owner of Toronto’s “Free Times Café” cancelled the event booking.

Celebrating their censorship, Canadian Women Against Antisemitism posted the publicity for the talk with the message “event cancelled” superimposed and the message, “Phew! That's a relief. Free Times Cafe owner Judy really turned it around. We are so grateful to the organizations that helped us advocate. When our community works together, we are amazing.”

For their part, Tafsik Organization posted an image of the event with “cancelled” drawn through it. They stated, “Jew haters always lose. @dimitrilascaris Your event has been cancelled. Thank you to the Free Times Cafe! Tafsik is always going to advocate for our community. Shavua Tov [good week] everyone!”

Israel Now’s Meir Weinstein posted the “cancelled” image with “Good work everyone. The event is canceled.” Weinstein had previously posted, “Please contact the Jewish owned Free Times Cafe and ask them to cancel this anti Israel pro ‘Armed Resistance’ event.”

Judy Perly admitted in three different messages that she cancelled the event due to pressure from genocidal Jewish supremacists. Perly wrote, “The Jewish community is in uproar over this and they made me aware that he’s considered a big antisemite. Whatever it is it has to be canceled. I’m sorry. Judy.”

A follow up statement repeated the point. Perly wrote, “Hi Barry, you need to know that your speaker Dimitri is perceived by the Jewish community as an antisemite. I received a flood of messages telling me that if he spoke at Free Times, they would never come again and none of their friends would come again and all kinds of Jewish organizations contacted me about this.”
In a third message Perly added, “As it is my [Jewish themed] brunch reservations just went down from an average of 35 to 40 to 7. I understand what you’re talking about, but the Jewish community can be very emotional — and any perception of negativity towards anything Jewish or unfortunately Israel spreads like wild fire & is immediately labeled anti-Semitic.”

With a cafe in the “liberal/left” Kensington market, Perly frames herself as peace-minded Jewish Torontonian. But she has just bolstered open bigots and supporters of genocide in her community. She’s also (inadvertently) confirmed that few Jewish-owned institutions will defend free speech or simple humanism when it comes to the wanton slaughter of Palestinians, Lebanese and Iranians. Whether its substantive ideological agreement, familial ties, a sort of Jewish ‘nationalism’ or different forms of financial leverage, Jewish institutions overwhelmingly concede to bloodthirsty fanatic supremacists.

The hardline Jewish supremacists who pressed Judy Perly centred her Jewishness in their campaign to repress speech precisely because they understand the religious/ethnic dynamic.

Whether the institutions state it crassly or just uphold it in practice, an authoritarian, genocidal supremacist ethos prevails among mainstream Jewish organizations in Canada. It’s pathetic and sad, but more important, odious.

The new venue for the August 18, 7pm, “The Imminent Decline and Fall of the American Empire” is Taco Taco restaurant (319 Augusta Ave.).

Palestinians, anti-genocide activists & the McGill undergraduate population should be the one’s suing the administration. But a Zionist judge just okayed the first step in a suit claiming it’s racist to oppose genocidal Jewish supremacy. And the class action demanding “anti-Zionism be recognized as a manifestation of antisemitism” will be ‘countered’ by a university administration heavily influenced by donors promoting apartheid and genocide.

McGill students have twice voted overwhelmingly to oppose the institution’s support for the lawless supremacist state. With the biggest turnout in student union history, 78.7% of McGill undergraduates voted in November 2023 for their university to sever ties with “any corporations, institutions or individuals complicit in genocide, settler-colonialism, apartheid, or ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.”

Righteous students who’ve campaigned to press the administration to listen to the will of their student body have been harassed by university security that’s been greatly bolstered in a bid to repress opposition to genocide. The McGill administration responded to the Spring/Summer 2024 student encampment on an unused, if well placed, part of the campus by repeatedly asking the Montréal police to intervene and even sought a court ruling to force the police to do so.
Soon after the encampment was dismantled McGill President Deep Saini spoke at Zionist organized town hall where he threatened professors over any “abuse of podium.” “Nobody would be allowed to abuse their position to make a (political or hateful) statement”, Saini declared. He even asked Jewish Zionist students to spy on professors, reportedly “calling on Jewish students to be the ears on the ground and report any breaches of conduct.” Saini concluded, “Nobody is going to be now excluded from or made to feel uncomfortable in class because they are a Zionist and support Israel.”

Years of anti-Palestinian repression by the McGill administration is well documented. Still, Quebec Superior Court judge Dominique Poulin recently authorized a class-action lawsuit against McGill ostensibly on behalf of Jewish students who allege the administration failed to protect them from discrimination and intimidation by anti-genocide protesters. According to the law firm’s statement, “FFMP is representing a McGill student seeking authorization from the Quebec Superior Court to institute a class action against McGill University on behalf of all Jewish students registered at the University from October 8, 2023 onwards (including undergraduate, masters, continuing education, doctoral and post-doctoral students). The class action alleges that McGill failed to reasonably enforce its policies in the face of antisemitic and anti-Zionist conduct on its campus, and seeks compensation for Jewish students who were accordingly deprived of a safe, welcoming and respectful university environment since October 8, 2023. The action also seeks an order that McGill enforce its policies and that anti-Zionism be recognized as a manifestation of antisemitism.”

Despite endless violations of international law by the Zionist state, Poulin has allowed this nonsense to move forward. The judge has made other pro-genocidal rulings. In April 2024 she granted a six-month injunction to restrict anti-genocide protests within 50 metres of 27 Jewish institutions and Poulin previously denied Independent Jewish Voices’ request to intervene in the McGill class action suit.

Before her appointment to the Quebec Superior Court Poulin was at Zionist law firm Robinson Sheppard Shapiro LLP. In December 2023 Robinson Sheppard Shapiro signed a letter to law school deans that was a response to law students who objected to genocide. The firm has also sponsored numerous events put on by the Lord Reading Law Society, which describes itself as “the collective voice of Jewish jurists in Quebec.” That group regularly hosts pro-Israel speakers.

The Montreal firm has a partner in Israel, which notes on its site “We are proud of the fact that we regularly receive referrals from some of the largest and most prestigious law firms throughout the world, such as… Robinson Sheppard Shapiro.”

The ‘antizionism is antisemitism’ suit has a decent chance of succeeding because the McGill administration is unlikely to effectively counter it. Jewish pro-genocide donors have immense influence within the university’s power structure, as billionaire donor Sylvan Adams made clear in an October 2024 Canadian Jewish News interview. The billionaire said he and Saini “agree on everything” when it comes to the “problem” of antisemitism. In an interview in which he called on McGill to expel students opposing genocide, Adams detailed how Zionist donors coordinate to leverage their wealth to suppress students’ demands.

In 2022 Adams put up $29 million to establish the Sylvan Adams Sports Science Institute as part of a project that partners McGill with Tel Aviv University. Other Israel supporters such the Azrielis, Seymour Schulich, Aldo Bensadoun, Heather Reisman/Gerald Schwartz and Charles Bronfman have given tens of millions of dollars to the university. Also McGill’s chancellor, Pierre Boivin, is Vice-Chair of the Board of arch-Zionist Stephen Bronfman’s private investment firm Claridge Inc, which is heavily invested in Israel.

Assisted by B’nai Brith, a small group of genocidal Jewish supremacist students, who probably don’t even represent most McGill Jewish students, have benefited from a Zionist judge in their bid to sue a sympathetic university administration because their peers overwhelmingly oppose complicity in genocide.

It’s beyond ridiculous how the legal system is being abused by important, powerful people who would turn Quebec and Canada’s courts into an arm of the Israeli state.

Not because overpopulation causes humanitarian crisis.

Because large, young populations in resource-rich countries create political pressure for those countries to control their own resources.

The memo was explicit: if developing countries develop politically conscious, resource-nationalist governments responding to their own populations' needs, they will demand control of their oil, their minerals, their agricultural land.

And that control would come at the expense of American access.

The solution proposed was population control programs, funded through USAID and international organizations, targeting those specific countries.

Not as humanitarian aid.

As strategic intervention to reduce the political pressure that large populations place on governments to actually serve their people.

This document exists. It is declassified. You can read it.

And then you can look at fifty years of American-funded population programs in the Global South with the full knowledge of what the architects said, privately, in 1974, about what those programs were actually for.

The aid was real.

The stated purpose was false.
