It's been interesting and puzzling to witness the problems with accuracy in UK economic statistics over the past few years. (See the links in the next tweet for more.) It seems that the Office for National Statistics, ONS, now struggles to effectively measure basic figures such as employment, trade, and inflation. This resulted in a quite scathing government report published last summer, where Robert Devereux, a former permanent secretary, concluded that "most of the well-publicised problems with core economic statistics are the consequence of ONS’s own performance."

There's a lot of discussion about the travails facing the UK these days (including this big piece in The Atlantic a few weeks ago[1]), and the problems with the ONS feel like an unsettling microcosm of diffuse decline in broader institutional competence.

Anyhow: at Stripe, we became curious about the UK's published entrepreneurship data. While we observe a boom in many parts of the world, official figures don't show a similar increase in the UK. In the latest Stripe Economics post, we dug into the data, and, as far as we can tell, the official figures are probably misleading. The good and the bad news (mostly good, I think!) is that the UK is almost certainly witnessing an unmeasured boom in entrepreneurship: https://t.co/R7oTZNmxc6

UK-specific issues aside, I suspect that this measurement question is illustrative of forthcoming econometric challenges. Keeping the world's macro indicators up-to-date in response to the faster-than-usual changes wrought by AI will be both increasingly difficult and increasingly important in the coming years.

June was a big month at ElevenLabs.

We hosted our biggest Summit yet with 2,500 leaders in Warsaw, signed partnerships with four governments, crossed $500M ARR, welcomed an incredible new set of investors, and kept shipping across our models and products.

All powered by the momentum of shipping, and by our customers building the future - all pushing in one direction: changing how the world communicates with AI. Here are some of the highlights.

Research:
- Dubbing v2 - carrying over the emotion, performance, and intent of the original content, and solving the problem of flat, disconnected dubbing.
- Music v2 - with better vocals, instrumentation, arrangement, and language support across genres.

For teams building customer experiences:
- Procedures - packaged sets of instructions that define how agents operate in common scenarios, just like employees follow SOPs.
- New modalities - so agents can process images, files, audio notes, contacts, and location pins in customer conversations.
- Speech Engine - so developers can turn an existing chat agent into a full voice agent with just one prompt.

For marketers and creators:
- Ads Engine - automatically localising ads across 50+ languages and pushing new creative back into ad platforms.
- Avatars - creating talking-head videos from a script, voice, and photo.
- Flows Agent - letting teams build entire creative workflows through natural language in our node-based canvas.

In our ecosystem:
- Added more watermarking techniques for future authenticity of content
- Crossed $22M paid out to people who have added their voices to the Voice Library.

Deploying AI in public services is one of the best ways to ensure the benefits are felt broadly, so it's exciting to be partnering with the UK Government to transform how people access information and support.

There are lots of cool examples of governments using voice AI across Europe. For example, our AI agents answer government hotlines in Ukraine when air raid warnings mean employees have to stay at home; and act as multilingual tour guides on far flung islands in Greece.
