The SADC-RTGS system enables seamless cross border payments between 16 SADC nations, a powerful engine driving economic integration and growth across Southern Africa.

The South African Reserve Bank has embarked on the Payments Ecosystem Modernisation (PEM) programme which will enable fast, simple, inclusive and secure digital payments across South Africa. This does not mean the SARB is getting rid of cash. Instead the PEM programme is about creating more affordable and accessible digital payment options, bringing the country on par with its emerging market peers. The SARB's Head of the National Payment System Department Arif Ismail explains:
