This week in biotechnology:
1. There is a lot of skepticism about virtual cells. I don't think negative criticism is worthwhile, in part, because the first version of everything tends to be bad. Also, AlphaFold2 came out a full 26 years after the CASP competition first began! Technology development takes a long time.
2. Speaking of CASP: they may run out of money, as the NIH is offering “no reassurance” about their $800,000 grant application.
3. Scientists have reconstituted a complete set of tRNAs, thus making a “sustained, steady-state protein expression” system in vitro.
4. Microsoft Research publishes a paper about using DNA to track items moving through supply chains.
5. A sub-nanometer resolution structure of the bacterial flagellar motor (image below).
6. First human genome sequence from ancient Egypt; 4800 years old.
7. Researchers are using a protein language model to find new PETases, or enzymes that can eat plastic.
8. There is a lichen that can withstand insane UV-C radiation’ 20-times the level found on Mars. “After 3 months [of exposure]—likely the highest amount of UV-C radiation ever tested on an organism—Singh pulled the sample so he could finish his master’s thesis in time. About half of the lichen’s algal cells had survived. Then, when Singh and Sun ground up and cultured part of the surviving lichen, about half of its algal cells sprouted new, green colonies after 2 weeks, showing it maintained the ability to reproduce.”
9. AI imaging tools are being used to find healthy sperms for in vitro fertilization.
10. Chinese pharma companies are making their own weight-loss drugs.

Our ex-zd compression is now published in Genome Research. ex-zd lossy mode can reduce 30-40% of the @nanopore signal data size, and the basecalling accuracy scatter is at a similar level to running the original data on two different GPUs - V100 vs A100.

During my PhD, one of the most frustrating challenges was trying to interpret genes labeled as “hypothetical proteins.” 1/n
