it took me over 10 refreshes to get @X opened on @brave

and other browsers took several minutes to even load the sign in page and make it interactive.

My Mac suddenly decided it didn't like my monitor.

MonitorControl and BetterDisplay both reported that the monitor had no DDC capability.

I toggled DDC in the monitor's OSD, replugged the USB-C cable, power-cycled the monitor... nothing.

Rebooted the Mac.

Everything started working again.

Meanwhile, DDC over HDMI worked perfectly with my Windows laptop.

Apparently I overestimated my 4.5-year-old Dell.

It was formatting a new drive. I decided to launch a game, and it promptly shut itself down from overheating.

Luckily, it was only a full disk format. It could have been important data!

A lesson? Don't trust machines too much.

I was also about to write off Ambrane's Type C to Type A USB Adapter for fake USB3 advertising.

It couldn't deliver even on laptop's bare USB port.

However after the dock worked, even that seems to work now. Verified it with USBTreeview.

USB is...an interesting protocol.

I had almost lost trust in the Amazon Basics USB-C dock.

Its USB 3 ports were only giving me USB 2 speeds.

Decided to give it power via its USB-C PD port as a debugging step.
