Spent the morning at the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam. Went in apprehending chaos, but found the event to be well organised.

In many ways, the story of the AI summit is the story of India itself. You can applaud the audacity of young AI startups attempting to build India’s own large language models and cheer the enterprise AI applications that are showing signs of success. Or you can mock the Galgot fiasco and criticise the logistical hiccups people faced while initially getting in.

What seems undeniable is this: the AI summit has taken the conversation on artificial intelligence out of corporate boardrooms and onto the main street.

I met several young founders working on extremely innovative product ideas powered by AI. Some of these will fail. A few will scale. That’s the nature of the game.

Rather than remain a bystander, the Indian government is trying to position India as a key player in the global AI race. It’s easy to criticise what went wrong. It’s far harder to inspire a nation to dream, strive and thrive.

In an age of sharp social polarisation, people will see the glass as half empty or half full depending on their worldview. But even if you set politics aside for a moment, one thing is clear: in the success of India’s AI strategy lies a significant part of our collective future.
