China has introduced strict new regulations for online influencers.

Under the new rules, content creators must possess a relevant university degree or professional certification before they can discuss specialized topics such as medicine, finance, education, law, or health. The policy, issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China, aims to curb misinformation and raise the overall quality of online content.

Influencers wishing to cover these subjects on platforms like Douyin, Weibo, and Bilibili are now required to submit proof of their qualifications. Platforms are responsible for verifying credentials and removing any non-compliant content.

Violators face significant penalties, including fines of up to 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,000), account suspension, or permanent bans.

While supporters view the measure as a necessary step to protect the public from misleading or harmful advice, critics argue that it could restrict free expression and limit diverse voices online.

The regulation reflects China’s broader effort to tighten control over digital content and establish higher standards of credibility in the influencer economy.

He's Tukaram Mundhe, a 2005-batch IAS from Maharashtra.

Over the last few weeks, you might have heard his name. That is because he was recently appointed Commissioner of State’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since taking charge, the FDA has been on an absolute warpath, raiding illegal, fake, synthetic, and adulterated products. From synthetic milk networks and adulterated paneer to illegal gutkha and unhygienic eateries, nothing has escaped his radar.

Mundhe has made it clear that even the most famous names will not get a free pass. His department shocked Mumbai by suspending the food licenses of iconic establishments, such as the 73-year-old Marine Drive ice cream parlor K. Rustom & Co., alongside famous eateries like Shalimar Hospitality, Noor Mohammadi Hotel, and Rahmaniya Restaurant, after surprise inspections uncovered severe hygiene violations, including live pests and expired ingredients.

Such is the fear of his crackdowns that, just two days ago, dairy farmers were caught on video spilling hundreds of liters of synthetic milk after rumors of an impending FDA raid spread.

This is his 25th transfer in a 21-year career, a testament to his refusal to bend to political pressure. It makes you wonder: if just one IAS officer can bring about so much change, where would our country be if every bureaucrat were as uncompromising and proactive as him?

While Europe is responding to heat waves by buying more air conditioners,

China is deploying infrastructure that cools public space at a fraction of the energy cost.

Rooftops across Shanxi province are fitted with mist nozzles that spray droplets fine enough to evaporate before they hit the ground.

They switch on automatically at 35°C and drop surrounding air temperature by 5 to 8°C within minutes. The same system now runs at bus stops in Chongqing, public squares in Beijing and Wuhan.

The technology is not new. Evaporative cooling is textbook thermodynamics. What is new is that a government decided to fund the rollout at city scale before anyone wrote a policy paper about it.

A friend was asking me about taxation for Hindu Undivided Families (HUF).

If you're married and a Hindu, you can use a HUF to plan and save your taxes. HUF is treated as a separate entity, so all these deductions will apply separately to HUF along with the individual deductions.

So, transferring any property yielding rental income to the HUF, opening a Demat account in the HUF name, transferring money to the HUF bank account, accepting gifts, etc.

Whenever they tell you it can't be done in the modern age, show them Dresden.

What's been achieved in Dresden is the most inspiring architectural feat for decades. Everything you see in the bottom image was built, from scratch, in the last 20 years.

The city was a gem of German Baroque architecture, completely levelled by Allied bombings during WW2 - more than 80% of the buildings in the historic city center were either damaged or totally destroyed.

Heartbreakingly, the wonderful Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) lay in rubble for decades, under the East German communist regime which refused to rebuild it. It was left in a pile as a "memorial against war" for 50 years. When the Berlin Wall finally fell, the people endeavored to bring it back.

Work began in 1993 to piece the church back together, brick by brick; every stone in the pile was sorted and carried off to be analyzed. Except for the brand new dome, it was reconstructed using as much original stone as possible, to the exact specifications of the original (as much as could be pieced together from old photographs).

The work took 11 years, and in 2005, the Frauenkirche was reconsecrated - rising like a phoenix from the ashes. It was finished one year ahead of schedule and just in time for the city's 800-year anniversary celebrations.

In a remarkable gesture, the gilded orb and cross atop the new dome were crafted by an English goldsmith - whose father partook in the bombing of the city in 1945.
