@braciti57 @Nath_burn I loved the development of cinema, where everyone's first idea was to use it to scare the crap out of each other, and storytelling came later.

@ychoii26 True, the lack of planning and care from Trump is clearly seen in his tweets, especially compared to the fireside chats.

[Adam @ankcomm106]

@junpei_taguchi Very true, I think we still see echoes of it today

[Adam @ankcomm106]

Seems like The War of the Worlds had a "cinema of attractions" style effect on those who tuned in.

[Adam @ankcomm106]

@junpei_taguchi Unfortunately, I think Trump's twitter account does serve the same role as the fireside chat, although it's quite different on the surface.

[Adam @ankcomm106]

@braciti57 Ah yeah, definitely them too

[Adam @ankcomm106]

I think studios like Pixar have really mastered the act of creating empathy with characters quite different from ourselves

@braciti57 I agree, I think nobody does character driven stories better than he does.

[Adam @ankcomm106]

@VtranCommClass I agree, and I also feel the improvements in TV show quality within the past few years have helped grow these sites too

[Adam @ankcomm106]

Also I really recommend Rear Window, it's a great movie

An interesting idea related to Mulvey's work is the Bechdel Test, a measure of gender inequality in film, which half of all movies fail.

The attractions of early cinema seem similar to the horror movies of today, designed for excitement through shock

@minhtopotato 100% agree

The power of the picture compared to television is its permanence, not unlike the power of writing compared to speech.

The "cloaking device" of muddied language, used to keep people from understanding certain concepts, is one seen prominently in today's politics.

I find Benjamin's take on the spread and "assimilation" of stories (p91) oddly poetic.

It's interesting to see the vast difference between the oral culture and the written one, but more interesting is that Ong believes the next step is computer based #comm106
