This is a huge labor of love for me as someone very annoying about reading books b4 they become shows. Looking up ASOIAF fan theories & rereading Jaime chapters kept me sane during 2020 & now I can inflict my thoughts on everyone else

Early GoT is still a spectacular show, but honestly, its clunky & often callous treatment of female characters, especially with regards to SA, & the constant use of nudity and sex to soften the blow of heavy handed exposition really makes me wonder how it'd be received today.
Great time to remind everyone that as much as I bitch and whine about House of the Dragon, it could be much worse! (This is actually a decent episode) (ignore the formatting errors guys I’m really busy okay)
Rhaenyra has had the realization that achieving her goal of being queen means reinforcing violent patriarchal systems at least like three times which unfortunately means I could not gaf about this episode of House of the Dragon
@quinnthegm imo it wouldn’t have fallen so flat if GOT hadn’t butchered the whole PTWP thing so badly; the fact they did & then there was this what felt like an HBO-mandated reference to it was awful. Plenty of ways to make Alicent want to put Aegon on the throne & keep her sympathetic
I agree that thematically HOTD is right on the money, but as a narrative it falls really flat and its determination to remove almost all agency from its characters is ruining any sense of momentum; damn shame because it’s also the closest we will get to seeing AFFC adapted
controversial opinion but ryan condal captures asoiaf's themes and the heart of their world so much better than d&d ever did. the heart in conflict with itself, the dark magic of the old gods, the very apparent parallels to affc.. ryan condal my goat
@deligny_alice I’m harsh on the show bc I think it gets so much right about ASOIAF that GOT never did, but it stumbles more as a narrative which is more disappointing than if it didn’t understand ASOIAF at all lol, and imo Jace is one of the characters who gets the short end of the stick
@deligny_alice I also think Rhaenyra herself ping ponged back & forth a lot that season after that great S1 ending which didn’t help matters for any Team Black members either bc they were all beholden to her uneven writing/arc
@deligny_alice I agree the Baela relationship suffered more, but I still think his relationship w Rhaenyra was not enough of a focus to land which is a shame bc other parts of S2 could have easily been truncated (Criston & Daemon both spin their wheels a bit too much in the first half imo)
@deligny_alice Yeah the writers strike hamstrung them, they do give him some focus scenes but knowing that he was going to die either towards the end of S2 as originally planned or as the opener of S3, I don’t think they focused nearly enough for his death to have the impact it should
@deligny_alice Ah yeah, I think my issue with that is they don’t really give him any breathing room to explore that, some cursory things but then they spend more time with the Lannister twin & Lohar than w/ Jace grappling with that, which is disappointing
@deligny_alice —but not the Team Black kids. That’s def changing for Rhaena since they’re giving her Nettles’ story (which I dislike but it gives her something to do) & hopefully it changes for Baela, but imo they have a huge balance problem w the ensemble & Jace was one of the biggest victims
@deligny_alice You are right that character ≠ story though, I’m thinking of Jaime in ACOK/S2 where he’s barely there & just sits around but still oozes personality, you can figure out what makes him tick & he has the great “so many vows” scene. Some of the HOTD ensemble gets those moments—
@deligny_alice I think that’s partially why I am so disappointed—bc thematically everything is there, these characters could be amazing, but they need to have more going for them & have more than 2 lines an episode (unlike the Green children who have by & large been given heaps & benefitted)
@deligny_alice Thematically yes but I don’t think that translates to having an actual character. What did Jace do of substance until last night’s episode? When did he take action in a way that changed the storyline? When was his relationship with Baela developed? etc.
