I have warned for a long time that if people conclude the ballot box is broken, politics will eventually spill beyond the ballot box.

For a generation, millions have voted for border control.

They voted for governments promising lower immigration.

They voted for Brexit to take back control.

They have watched the boats continue, illegal immigration continue and parts of their country change beyond recognition, while being told to be patient, moderate and reasonable.

There comes a point when some people stop believing that voting changes anything.

I do not say that because I want to see disorder. I do not want to see lives disrupted for Labour’s failures. I say it because it is the entirely predictable consequence of people feeling that democratic consent has been ignored again and again.

That is why I understand the anger behind what we are seeing in Dover.

However, if protesters obstruct HGVs, freight and ordinary working people trying to get on with their lives, then of course there is a legitimate criticism to be made. You do not punish a lorry driver trying to earn a living for the failures of Westminster.

But Labour politicians should be very careful about spending all their time condemning the symptom while refusing to confront the disease.

People are desperate because they believe they have exhausted every democratic route available to them.

The answer is not to sneer at them. The answer is to prove that democracy still works.

Stop the boats. Control the borders. Enforce the law. Deliver what people have voted for repeatedly.

Because if the political class continues to demonstrate that the ballot box changes nothing, it should not pretend to be shocked when some people eventually conclude that they need another route. A route that, I repeat for the perpetually outraged, I do not want us to take.

Today was a hugely successful day. An important statement was made, no violence, no arrests and an impressive level of coordination.

The reaction of the liberal media, journalists, mainstream commentators has been very illuminating. “Disgrace”, “intimidating”, “all face coverings must be banned”. Yet when it’s Antifa every single time, she it’s SUTR, when it’s many groups of Islamists after Southport or horror of horrors if you dare to suggest banning the Burqa/Niqab they totally lose their shit.

The truth is they ONLY want to ban things when it’s working class white men!!

They then admitted that there would be a period where the labels did not say folic acid was in the food.
