A “third culture kid” is someone born into one culture and raised in another. They’re often multilingual and chameleonic, adopting behaviors across cultures.
Shopify feels like a “third culture company.”
It’s an iconic tech company yet an outsider to Silicon Valley. It has the scale of a behemoth and the speed of a startup. It combines German bluntness with Canadian niceness and big beautiful American ambition.
It even combines things that seem like contradictions: high intensity with goofy fun, mastery with experimental hacking, optimistic idealism with highly efficient capitalism.
I see this delightful third culture in employees, from interns to officers, to @tobi and @harleyf and my colleagues on the board.
Shopify’s culture is so distinct because Tobi built it the way he built Shopify: when what already exists isn’t quite right, make your own!
Most sales compensation models are misaligned. They reward the signature, not what comes after, so we rebuilt it.
Starting in 2026, @Shopify's sales compensation will be tied to one thing: long-term merchant success. It’s a bet on merchants and our team.
How we do this at Coinbase:
- Have strong, clear values. Reinforce them often, to staff and in public.
- Keep a high bar for hiring. Never compromise. Prioritize mission/culture alignment.
- Empower DRIs so people can act like owners and get things done.
- Get teams together in person every quarter! We are remote first, but not remote only. We have global ‘hubs’ where our teams get together in person for surges.
- Offer budgets for meeting up with colleagues outside of work. This could be a team dinner, going to a sporting event, or even a virtual lunch.
- Recharge weeks twice a year, and regular no-meeting weeks, to help everyone unplug and get focused work done.
Here we go!
🌐 BFCM weekend has officially started in the first time zones, so let's go live.
This is the best Live Globe experience yet. Beautiful. And what's even better than a bfcm globe? One in a room full with toys and tools to make it your own. We may have gotten a little bit carried away there... 😇
Vote out Aaron Peskin, Dean Preston, Connie Chan, Hillary Ronen, Shamann Walton and all their incompetent cronies
They created the doom loop, the housing crisis, the failed fentanyl response and destroy our public schools
@cryptobuilder_@el33th4xor @kvny2046 @socrates1024@phildaian But will the normal person you’re creating content for know what a TEE is? i’d bet there are 1000s of videos showing the value of TER without exposing the unnecessary technical detail. why lead w acronyms — just gatekeeps
The more "seasoned" I get in my career the more I realize there is so much value in being confident enough to ask the "dumb" question. It is rarely dumb and can often lead to finding really obvious but hidden misalignment across teams or orgs.
Trying to understand Bitcoin's price movements this weekend...If it is, as Bitcoin bulls believe, a store of value, during a war, wouldn't it be a considered safe haven? And if it is a hedge against inflation, wouldn't buyers rush to it out of fear that countries will spend more on conflict? What explains its fall? I'm genuinely curious to hear various perspectives...

It was a model of female empowerment at work and the beginning of a lifelong connection and friendship. That type of trust and teamwork is really something I've never experienced, particularly with other female peers! Top of the list of things I'm most grateful to @opensea for!
And I don't just mean work things but also just our lives and general work ethos -- we all live in SF, we all had multiple kids under 5, and we all had a OpenSea > individual mentality in everything we did.
