๐จ|| JUST IN: Chelsea is expected to explore midfield options in January.
The area looked like a potential weakness when the summer closed, with Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos leaving for a deal worth ยฃ175 million combined, while Dario Essugo joined Strasbourg on loan.
Chelsea have since been hit by injuries to Moises Caicedo and summer signing Jordan Henderson, leaving Xabi Alonso with limited options.
Romeo Lavia and Reece James have both had fitness problems and have started three of Chelsea's five matches, but the pair are yet to fully convince as a midfield partnership.
Alonso has tried different combinations, including Malo Gusto alongside Lavia and Valentin Barco with Henderson, but Chelsea are still searching for a solution.
The lack of midfield protection has also contributed to Chelsea's defensive problems, with opponents finding it relatively easy to counter-attack.
Caicedo's return should strengthen the midfield, while Chelsea previously tried to sign Monaco's Lamine Camara before the move fell through.
The club is now expected to consider midfield reinforcements in January, although Alonso would need to find a more settled partnership before the transfer window opens.

Three international breaks in three months is ridiculous.
Bundle qualifiers and Nations League games into fewer windows. Stop constantly disrupting the domestic season.
FIFA, UEFA and the leagues need to fix the calendar. Clubs and players canโt keep paying the price for poor scheduling.
