The Irish government has refused several visas for Gaza students to come and pursue their studies in Ireland because of:

1- Educational gaps where every university was reduced to rubble.
2- A lack of documentation, including proof that students will return to obliterated Gaza, where every service was shattered.
3- Private funding for scholarships.

The stringent, unacceptable, and hypocritical conditions on students from Gaza will leave them to face inevitable death.

I'm a second-generation bookseller. My family runs Houston's largest used & rare bookstore and I'm building an AI tool for used bookstores. We got hit by exactly these orders, including a single order for 70 obscure books that made us pause online sales entirely. So I dug in. I don't think this connects the way people want it to.

Every ingredient of the viral story is true. ISBNdb really does advertise sourcing books for AI companies. Anthropic really did destructively scan millions of books though they were mostly acquired through things like library deaccessions, not bookstore inventory. And booksellers really are getting bizarre bulk orders. But "rare" here isn't what you're picturing. It's The Insider's Guide to Metro Denver (1995) and how-to-use-WordPerfect 1991 manuals. Obscure, but often not precious.

When we combed through our orders, nearly every book bought from us was either unavailable on Amazon or listed there at 5, 10, 20x our price on the platform they were purchased on. And the shipments are going to FBA prep companies: which is what you do with a book you're about to resell, not one you're about to cut apart. There is more than circumstantial evidence that this is a well-funded company running algorithmic arbitrage, buying underpriced or out-of-stock books to relist on Amazon at markup. This evidence includes an official denial that they are selling to train AI but I don't want to mention them for several reasons. You can Google it.

That's more mundane than the shredder story. The actual risk is worse, though, because it's quieter: books that don't sell via FBA eventually get liquidated. If we really hold the last copies of some of these (and comparing platforms, it looks like we might) we're feeding them into a portal they may not come back from. No AI company required.

Everyone assumes the internet preserved everything. It didn't. Many of these books have almost no metadata anywhere, just a scattered listings across proprietary databases then nothing. That's what my project is for: building better bibliographic records for these books than exist anywhere else, so we at least have a map of what we stand to lose. So the Library of Alexandria is still burning, just more slowly, and kore from “who cares” than from some cinematic villain.

A little while ago, my daughter Kiraz looked at me with sparkling eyes and asked:

"Daddy... will I have a little brother soon?"

I smiled at her, despite everything weighing on my heart, and replied:

"Yes, my sweetheart. You will have a little brother very soon."

She jumped with joy and said with the biggest smile:

"Finally... we'll have a brother who will play with us and protect us, just like Daddy always does."

At that moment, I couldn't hold back. I smiled, but my heart was crying. I looked at her and said:

"Yes, my little girl... and one day, we will all live together in freedom, safety, and happiness, God willing."

Her words are still echoing in my mind. They brought back a feeling of joy that I hadn't experienced in a very long time and gave me hope to hold onto despite all the pain surrounding us.

But hope alone is not enough.

🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."

My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."

I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

Several people have spoken to me here and told me that they no longer hear or see any news about what is happening in Gaza, even though the genocide is still ongoing, the massacres have not stopped, and the bombardment and attacks continue to claim lives every single moment.

Social media platforms are deliberately suppressing the truth and hiding everything that is happening in Gaza, in order to deceive the world into believing that a ceasefire has taken effect, and that the massacres, explosions, and attacks have come to an end.

We have not only been subjected to genocide on the ground in Gaza, but we are also being subjected to a systematic media blackout, aimed at erasing our voices, concealing the occupation's crimes, and covering up the suffering of a people being slaughtered before the eyes of the world.

Do not allow those who are complicit and bloodthirsty to deceive you once again. There is no ceasefire in Gaza. The massacres are still being committed, civilians are still being killed, and the truth remains under siege, just as the people of Gaza remain under siege.

Gaza City has become one of the most densely populated places in the world, after more than two million people were forced into an area of no more than 100 square kilometers, following the Israeli army's control over nearly 70% of the Gaza Strip, leaving the population crowded into only about 30% of its land.

The tragedy does not end with this overwhelming overcrowding. This remaining area is almost completely deprived of every basic necessity for life. Most families are living in worn-out and torn tents, with no electricity, no safe drinking water, no proper sanitation, no functioning hospitals, no medicines or medical treatment, and an extreme shortage of food and clean water.

Despite all of this, people continue to endure relentless bombardment, attacks, explosions, and massacres every single moment. Fear, terror, and anxiety have become a constant part of daily life. These massacres do not distinguish between children, women, the elderly, or young people—everyone here is a target.

The reality that families are living through in Gaza today is unlike anything else in the world. People wait for death every moment of every day, not because they have lost hope, but because they have been crushed by pain, exhausted by suffering, and consumed by hunger, fear, humiliation, and endless hardship until life itself has become unbearable.

Gaza has become a place that is no longer fit for human life. If this catastrophic reality continues without end, death will no longer be a possibility—it will become the inevitable fate awaiting everyone.

The Israeli military has just carried out a new massacre by targeting Al-Yemen Al-Saeed Hospital in northern Gaza.

I want to apologize for being absent from here recently, especially with the renewed U.S. aggression against Iran and the ongoing Israeli genocidal war on Lebanon.

I am currently undergoing treatment related to my latest war injury. My main right leg nerve was damaged, and over the past few days I underwent surgery at Ragheb Harb Hospital in my hometown in South Lebanon to remove deeply embedded shrapnel from my thigh. I am now facing a difficult recovery while dealing with neuropathic pain medications and an intensive treatment plan.

Most likely, I will not be able to return to field reporting or resume regular updates for at least another week. I hope the recovery will not take much longer if nerve reconstruction ultimately becomes necessary.

There is another piece of news: I am using this period to launch a new media project from South Lebanon, different in both format and scale from my previous work during last 2 years, both personal work and with FPTV. It will place a deeper focus on the issues facing South Lebanon from multiple perspectives, in several languages, and in collaboration with outstanding friends and colleagues from Lebanon and around the world.

Your constant support, messages, and concern have given me even more reason to continue my work as a journalist documenting the impact of war and reporting on events despite everything my people, and I personally, have endured, including the heavy loss of many loved ones. I will do my best to turn this period away from publishing into an opportunity to build a project that is even more effective at exposing realities on the ground and bringing truth and knowledge to everyone following what is happening on us in this part of the world.
