You can’t pave your way out of a traffic jam.
In my latest piece for @IndiaToday , I dive into why widening roads is a 20th-century trap for Gurugram. As our population doubles, adding lanes only invites "Induced Demand"—more roads simply lead to more vehicles, more pollution, more road deaths, more urban heat and more urban flooding. 🚗💨
To fix the crisis, we don’t need more bitumen; we need:
✅ 1,000+ AC electric buses
✅ Safe, shaded cycle tracks
✅ Robust Metro connectivity to suburban areas.
Many of us telling this from 2-3 decades, but not much mindset change. It’s time to design cities for people, not just vehicles. Let’s stop building walls and start building mobility. 🚶♀️🚲🚌

Walk-Talk at Janpath
Yesterday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (@CAQM_Official) in NCR and Adjoining Areas engaged with Raahgiri Foundation and @Nagarro to discuss how improved street design can help address #AirPollution in #DelhiNCR.
#CAQM team led by Member, Dr. Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, along with Dr. Vikas Singh, Dr. Dhananjay Kumar and Sh. Vinayak Azad participated in yesterday's walk-shop at #Gurgaon’s Model Street – Janpath. Led by Manas Human (@manashuman - Nagarro) and Ms. Nidhi Madan (@nid_mad - Raahgiri Foundation), Mr Nirmal Kumar, Air Cell & Regional Officer (HSPCB), the group including officials from @OfficialGMDA - Mr Vikas Mallik; Mr Naresh Dahiya; Mr. Singh, XEN Horticulture; Mr Maninder; and @MunCorpGurugram with the Raahgiri site team explored Janpath, followed by discussions at Nagarro on scaling up street redevelopment and air quality improvement.
Dr. Bajpayee emphasized, “Janpath is a great example of how streets can be redesigned to address multiple challenges - reducing air pollution, creating green spaces, and ensuring safety for vulnerable road users. It should serve as a model for the country.”
Manas Human added, “I’ve seen people using this space with care and responsibility. It shows they feel a sense of ownership - something we must encourage for every street to become safer and greener.”
We are hopeful that the #collaborations with such like-minded agencies, will see redesigned #streets play a clear and proactive role towards #cleaner air and safer #cities for everyone.
