저 일본 여자들은 일본 사회를 바꾸고 싶은 게 아니라, ‘너무 순종적이고 착한 나머지 세상에서 가장 불행해진 우리 일본 여자들’이라는 서사에 취해 있는 것뿐임. 하는 말도 보면 대체로 이런 식임.
“일본 여자는 전 세계에서 인기가 많지만 일본 남자는 인기가 없다.”
“일본 남자들 때문에 내가 제대로 된 <몸값>을 받지 못하는 거다. 일본 여자는 하나의 <브랜드>라서 일본에서는 평범한 취급을 받던 나도 외국에만 나가면 공주 대접을 받을 수 있다.”
“일본 남자들은 데이트 비용을 반반 내자고 하지만 외국 남자들은 전부 내준다.”

이런 식으로 일본 사회의 여성혐오를 비판하는 척하면서도, 정작 그들이 원하는 건 여성혐오 자체의 철폐가 아니라 외국 남성들에게 더 높은 가치를 인정받는 것에 가깝지.

자기들이 떠받드는 중국·한국·서양 사회에도 일본과 다를 바 없는 여성혐오가 존재한다는 사실은 끝까지 외면함. 심지어 그 사회들에도 일본과 비슷한 여성혐오가 존재한다고 지적하면 화를 냄.
왜냐하면 그들에게 ‘순종적이고 가련한 일본 여자’라는 캐릭터는 단순한 자기 연민이 아니라, 외국 남성들에게 특별 대우를 받을 수 있게 해 주는 일종의 정체성이기 때문임. 그 서사를 부정하는 순간 자신들이 기대하던 특별 대우와 우월감까지 위협받는 거지.
