When I was growing up in Charleston, SC, as a young Air Force pilot, I lived downtown and walked to the Market frequently to drink beers and chat up College of Charleston girls.

These were the same years that Darius and Hootie & The Blowfish were just starting out. They played in bars for a minimal cover, and I’d walked over to listen.

I’ve been a fan ever since. Darius is a good man and a great American! I love this song.

A Light in the ClassroomIn the quiet hills of Ahoro-Esiele, in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area, the morning of May 15, 2025, began like any other.

Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher with over twenty years of service, rose before dawn. He prayed briefly at his family altar, kissed his wife goodbye, and walked the familiar red-dirt path to Community High School.

His students called him “Sir Mike.” To them, he was more than a teacherhe was the man who made numbers dance.

Michael was born on September 26, 1968.

He had grown up in the same community, attending local schools before training as a teacher. He taught first in Oke Ogun, then returned home, carrying the quiet conviction that education was the surest path out of hardship. He never raised his voice in class.

Instead, he drew careful diagrams on the cracked blackboard, explaining fractions and geometry with the patience of a farmer tending stubborn soil. “Numbers don’t lie,” he would say, smiling. “But they can open doors.”

That Friday, the doors opened to terror instead. Armed men stormed the school compound in broad daylight. Chaos swallowed the morning. Michael and dozens of pupils and fellow teachers were marched into the dense forest of the Old Oyo National Park. For fifty-six days they endured captivitychained, blindfolded, moved between hidden camps, surviving on minimal food and the faint hope that help would come.

In the darkness,

Michael became a quiet anchor. Survivors later spoke of how he whispered encouragement, prayed with the children, and tried to keep fear at bay. But the bandits demanded more than the community could give.

On a terrible day, they forced Michael to record a message. Then they beheaded him. The video that surfaced shocked the nation. A man who had spent his life nurturing young minds was slaughtered for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time💔😭

Back in Ahoro-Esiele, his aged parents wailed. His wife, married to him for more than a decade, mourned a husband who left no child behind yet had fathered hundreds through his teaching. His siblings, one of them in America, carried the pain across oceans.

The community lit candles and held vigils. Lawmakers condemned the killing. Security forces eventually rescued the remaining hostages on July 10, 2026. Joy for the returned mixed with grief for those who never would.

Yet Michael’s story did not end in the forest.

His students remembered the extra lessons he gave freely.
The neighbor he helped with farm work. The quiet dignity he carried even when times were lean. A popular musician reportedly donated a house to his family.

The First Lady visited. Headlines faded, but the memory lingered like a chalk equation that refuses to be erased.

In the weeks that followed, parents in Oriire began walking their children to school in groups. Teachers spoke more openly about safety. Young people in the community vowed to honor him by studying harder. One of his former pupils, now at university, said, “Sir Mike taught us that even when the blackboard is broken, you can still write on the ground. He wrote on our hearts.”

Such a beautiful soul gone too soon by the hands of evil 💔
