Is it a Dog’s Dinner? More like a Pig in a Poke - a Tory Two Card Trick to Place Constitutional Responsibility on Family Members for Care Supports. For Care Supports Provided by Every Other State in EU. I’m Voting NO on ‘Care’ 42.B
‘It is very much the family’s responsibility’
I’m sure it’s much easier to ensure your family is looked after when your yearly salary is €205,000.
Carers allowance is €248pw (standard without increases). Which amounts to €12,896 per year. So 6.2% of what you earn @LeoVaradkar
That’s before any deductions made because it’s means tested. In 2022 there were 116,000 recorded family carers and only 89,000 were eligible for *any* carers allowance.
Of those 89,000, almost HALF had deductions to their payment after means testing.
Imagine applying for a job and being told you’d not be paid because your partner earns enough already! We already are doing all we can to support our families.
Average costs of a nursing home in Ireland is €1564 per week.
Carers allowance also isn’t seen as an income so we can’t apply for loans or credit from banks.
So how exactly do you expect us to be able to then support our families Leo?
I’d love to see an initiative brought in where the means test was abolished and all family carers were essentially ‘hired’ by the state. Giving us stamps for pension, an actual employment to allow us stand a chance of purchasing a home or even simply getting a credit card or loan! It would also mean though that we would have to get at least minimum wage instead of the €1.47 an hour that our carers allowance currently works out at.
Maybe check your privilege @LeoVaradkar and recognised that not everyone has the same financial stability as you.
I’m off to play the lotto.

Festivals, adventure sports, motorcycling, and many more sectors cannot get affordable insurance.
Time for Government and insurers to step in with workable solution for these sectors before the fabric of Irish society is permanently damaged.

Adventure tourism startup in "very underdeveloped" area goes "above and beyond" on health & safety, has "extreme supervision" and no claims. Gets insurance quote equal to 47% of turnover. Insurer blames "minimum-pricing structure" and claims culture.
Who's fooling who here?
As another adventure business is forced to close its doors, "Crippling insurance premiums are increasingly the final nail in the coffin". @IrishMailSunday#InsuranceReform
ICYMI:
Insurance isn't sorted yet, but among all the crises facing government in 2023, insurance is the crisis closest to being resolved. The low-hanging fruit.

A pic I took in 2008, New York. This image was made famous by the 1942 children’s book “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge”….the message of the book is that even if you think you are very small you can still be very important. #leadership 🙂
