Today is Good Friday.
I’ve been thinking deeply about Jesus’s crucifixion and the fact that he willingly went through that torture and death in obedience to his father in heaven, God.
He didn’t have to.
And Satan even tempted him not to do it, to defy God’s will for him. That was a mighty temptation because Jesus knew what he would go through to the point it caused him to sweat blood.
But Jesus rebuked Satan and willingly chose torture and death on a Roman cross because it was God’s plan to sacrifice his own son as a one time sacrifice so that those who believe in him can receive God’s mercy and grace and be forgiven.
Jesus’s torture and crucifixion is a real life lesson to us all of what sin really is.
It is death.
The wages of sin are death.
Without faith in Jesus, as the one and only son of God who died and rose from the dead three days later, we all face eternal death as a result of our sins.
And to comprehend, as hard as it may be, that horrendous sacrifice done in love and obedience and the glorious miracle of resurrection, is the most humbling reminder for me.
“Amazing grace that saved a wretch like me..”
And as I reflect on all of this, I am reminded that we must always be on guard. Satan who even tempted the mighty son of God to defy God’s will, will surely tempt us day and night to defy God.
For Satan prowls constantly seeking to devour us in order to destroy us. He knows our weaknesses and sinful desires of our hearts and flesh, as we live in a fallen world and are all sinners.
However the Bible tells us that Satan has already been defeated, as Jesus proclaimed, as he hung by nails dying on the cross, “It is finished.”
But death could not hold him and three days later, Jesus defeated death and rose from the grave!
All honor and glory and praise be to him!!!
Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the father and he will come again!
To accept the sacrifice made for our sins is to put down our pride and recognize that we are sinners. And no matter what we do, on our own, we can not earn or gain our way into heaven.
Just as God created each of us and placed us in our mother’s wombs, gave us breath in our lungs, and a life to live, God has freely redeemed us from the eternal prison of death all out of his extraordinary amazing love and because HE alone is GOD.
