China is investing $295b in data centers and national computing hubs. They are investing in AI integration across the economy and government to unlock efficiencies. They are teaching their youth how to use AI. Their open source models are near-par with American frontier labs, at a fraction of the cost. Their models are being the backbone of emerging markets and sovereign AI ecosystems.

Not investing in the capacity needed to power the technologies of the future will sentence future generations to a China-led world.

Federal student loans should be tied to degrees that have a proven repayment rate over a given period of time (say 5-10 years) or be in strategically necessary fields (eg, STEM). The taxpayer should not be subsidizing degrees that will not get repaid or serve the interests of the country. These should be seen as investments in the longevity of the State, not handouts

Bingo. Where frontier labs have gone wrong is in assuming that each iteration of their tech will move the Overton window on the public’s perception of AI.

In reality, the average consumer doesn’t care about, nor do they need, Fable or Sol. The average consumer isn’t doing tasks where that level of intelligence is required.

When my mom downloaded Claude, she played with it for a few minutes, asked it a few questions, and said “this is what the hype is about?” Improve your onboarding and help shift the belief that AI is just advanced Google.

Regardless, frontier intelligence will likely end up being an institutional product (finance, healthcare, etc) because those are the entities able and willing to pay the token tax. But this assumes we fumble the open source race.

Alaska already has a sovereign wealth fund that pays dividends to its citizens, so you could easily add data centers to that kind of program.

Or, if our governors weren’t theater kids desperate for admiration, they’d copy the sovereign wealth fund concept, fund it with data center tax revenue, and invest in their state—rather than selling our future out our economic future because some knuckle-draggers saw a TikTok!
