It's an insult to us, @UEA_UCU and @UniteUEA that this is the new VCs opening statement to the press. The issue is not that there's too many staff, it's that people were asleep at the wheel, letting the financial crisis happen and then avoiding all accountability for it
According to who do we have too many staff? The executive team who are wanting to make the cuts? The students who rely on staff? The staff body that has been panicked and worried for months? Or the guy thats been in post for just over 5 hours?

Don't Destroy UEA Merch (well, posters and flyers) have landed! Email [email protected] or come to AHB 3.13 to pick some up - and feel free to join us door knocking and postering later in the week!
Solidarity and love to @UEA_UCU, fighting to prevent redundancies at UEA.
We’ve beaten redundancy threats before, and I am confident we will do it again. UEA staff will not pay the price for the universities financial mismanagement.
The whole union is with you✊

🚨 Today our local ballot @UEA_UCU is live!
We tried to get UEA leadership to work with us to avoid job cuts but here we are.
Now we need every eligible member to vote and vote yes.
Here's branch chair Michael Kyriacou on the importance of our vote https://t.co/lbVlLeP39W
In April, @UEA_UCU launched an indicative e-ballot on possible local industrial action. With a solid turnout of 61%, 82% of our members indicated they would be prepared to take strike action and/or engage in ASOS to oppose the proposed cuts.
It’s been 4 months since @uniofeastanglia bosses made the decision to force redundancies after their own severe mishandling of finances. University staff should not face the sharp end of a lack of management accountability. UCU utterly oppose these cuts.
It’s now been almost 4 months since UEA leaders announced they were looking to make a “significant and unpalatable” number of compulsory redundancies after posting a significant financial deficit.

Today @uniofbrighton has announced its intention to make more than 100 redundancies saving £17.9m. But our SMT have just SPENT a similar amount buying Virgin Active out of a lease.
We will fight this failure of management.
RT to support our fight!

We have repeatedly requested information to work out possible mitigations to protect jobs including salary caps on the highest earners (100K+). But instead they chose to remove the living wage for the lowest earners. Greater precarity and uncertainties for all workers + students.
As UEA progresses plans for massive job cuts to repair fiscal mismanagement damage our members have resoundingly indicated their willingness to take industrial action. We will now be running a statutory ballot. The toll on all staff and student is immeasurable.
