I woke up at 5AM.

Contacts in, shower, brush teeth.

Threw my bag over my shoulder - prepared for the workout of my life.

I assumed it would be a routine morning.

But I was wrong…

As I approached my car I found a pair of raggedy shoes by the driver's side door.

Neatly placed.

I look through the car window - holding my breath.

My center console was ravaged.

The clothes I left folded for the gym were spread throughout the car.

My emergency cash. Missing.

2 pair of shoes. Missing.

And it gets worse…

I check the trunk.

Empty.

A full set of golf clubs - gone.

$2000 worth of items stolen.

The "Why me?" mentality began to creep in.

Sorrow, self-pity, anger.

Clenching my fist.

I turned back toward my house.

Prepared to…

Skip the gym.

Call off work.

And lay in bed all day.

But then something happened...

A buzz from my phone.

My mother had texted me.

“Good morning, I love you. Have the best day”

My hand began to loosen.

Eyes started to water.

And a smile crept across my face.

Within seconds my perspective shifted.

Calmness, tranquility, inner peace.

“Today will be a good day.”

No.

“Today will be a great f*cking day.”

What had happened was out of my control.

But…

My emotions

My progress

My discipline

No person or event can steal those from me.

Don't let negative external factors dictate your emotion and action.

Don't value material things over mindfulness and relationships.

Don't miss out on the fruits that any day can bring.

Don't let a bump in the road steer you off course.

My mother helped me realize this:

You can control one thing in life.

Yourself.
