Western art spent five centuries arguing over three things: who really makes a work, who decides what it means, and how you know it's real.
Hashmasks took up all three, and worked them out on a public ledger. Not on paper. In a mechanism.
An art-historical reading, five years on.

LATEST: โก VVV and MOR surged after a US directive forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5, as decentralized AI projects pitch themselves as permissionless alternatives.
Treasury signer update.
@adidust is stepping down as a multisig signer and from his role in the project. He put years into Hashmasks and the treasury, and that time and effort are appreciated. All the best in what comes next.
Stepping in is @cur8orofearth, a longtime Hashmasker and a builder in his own right.
Worth saying plainly: there's no company and no DAO steering Hashmasks.
The masks live on Ethereum, owned and named by their holders since 2021. The treasury is managed by a 5/9 multisig of longstanding community members, and it has no power over the collection.
Some traits are just rare. This one tells a story.
Mask Subtype: Recluse. 56 out of 16,384.
A recluse is someone who lives apart, by choice.
On a puppet, a thing built to be controlled, that's almost a contradiction.
And that's what makes it good.

More than it looks. @aspenshredder
The African masks alone are a map ๐บ๏ธ of the continent. |
Shamal is Arabic for north
iNingizimu Zulu for south
Tsakiya Hausa for middle
Oorun Yoruba for sun
Nyati Swahili for buffalo
Bari a Nilotic people of the Nile
And Grebo is the mask Picasso pulled cubism's big idea from.
And that's only the African masks. Other mask types and traits are a whole separate rabbit hole.
The last layer of rarity comes from the holders, not the collection. The art is fixed. The name is open.
Whoever moves first gets it.
