It. Is. COMPLETE!!!! I can’t believe it. After 3 years putting my heart & soul into this map, Wild World is finished. Thank you everyone for the encouragement over the years, this was a beautiful journey and I’m deeply proud of it… a map of nature I’ve dreamt of since childhood.
The negative space idea came from a map I drew in my teens. I liked the idea of the world revealed through its animals, a nice fit for the Wild World cartouche.
The cartouche was the last thing drawn on Wild World. It’s a mini version of the entire artwork, with a map hidden in the negative space.
Cartouches are decorative emblems on maps, often where title, date, legend & other details are included. I tend to go crazy with mine 😅
@kmts_j@cardamomkiss That is a Large laminated poster of Wild World, my most popular print. The details are epic at that size. Like all prints it comes with the Animal guidebook too https://t.co/lbO3RQPNx0
@lighttrader7 Thank you, I greatly appreciate it. It’s wonderful to see the prints & puzzles embraced as gift ideas. I’ve always loved the combo of art & education, so I’m glad I can offer something that brings those together
It's even more gorgeous in person and I hope it will instill in my son a lifelong love of nature and the world around him. Thank you, @AntonThomasMaps!
@luxatrix Wonderful to hear this, and I’m glad they’re drawing. That’s how it all starts! Dinosaurs were my first obsession too, until I pivoted to NZ native birds
@gottakeepgoingn@cardamomkiss Yes, more puzzles are on the way! But if you’re in the US or Canada, both puzzles are available right now here: https://t.co/zmOOuE3iuu
@cardamomkiss It’s wonderful to hear you love the print! I hope it inspires your son too. I drew it because I feel a wild perspective on our planet is essential, and I wanted to spark curiosity & a love of nature. I hope you both get lots of enjoyment from the map over the years :)
@CharterVanilla Awesome 😊 It’ll be finished & printing in a few months. I can’t wait to see the final result! You can sign up to be notified when it’s ready here: https://t.co/45bIXkrJXG
@cloudyskye Thanks! Choosing cities is hard. It’s a map about nature/wildlife above all, so I went minimal. Just the huge metro area hubs, 1M+ population. I’m keeping it simple & skylines take up lots of space, but yea Oakland is a key city & it’s very distinct from SF/SJ. Was a hard choice
@ursusamericana Thank you! Once I finish that condor’s head it will be the 95th animal on the map. I think there’ll be over 300 species (all wild & native) in the end. California has incredible biodiversity!
@youwillmakemaps This is fantastic! I love Jake’s work. And it’s a really nice way to view California. It’s great when your perspective on familiar geography is upended, & horizontal gives more realism to the terrain - especially with so many mountains to draw.
A friend of mine and her son exploring Wild World. Seeing this map resonate with younger generations is wonderful. It’s one of the reasons I drew it, a nature-focused lens on Earth felt very important.
