@DickMackintosh Of all the profound damage wrought by Thatcherism the most insidious was long term. It turned Britain from an enterprise society into a rentier society. How the hell are we going to dig ourselves out of that perilous pit?
@g_gosden@MartinRemains But we had your sort of government - Tory - for 32 of the past 44 years, and UK food self-sufficiency collapsed from 82% to. 62%. You had your chance. You blew it.
@ListerLawrence NB. British-built of course means wholly produced or (more commonly) final assembly in UK. It does not refer to company ownership. Obviously.
Agree 100%. I am baffled that all public service providers are not firmly required to give first preference to British-built vehicles. As happens routinely (if covertly) in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and other countries trying to conserve their industrial heritage. UK is not even in the EU so much freer to implement โdistressed industryโ (eg cars, trucks, vans, buses) policies. At long last that very rare thing, a Brexit benefit, could be within our grasp!
@KemiBadenoch@Conservatives Donโt be silly. Itโs horses for courses. Nationalisation of Rolls Royce was one of the best things Ted Heath, Tory PM, ever did.
๐จNEW: Kerry Kennedy has announced Late Show Host Stephen Colbert is the recipient of the 2025 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for his advocacy for free speech and speaking truth to power.
RETWEET to congratulate Colbert on this honor!
@zatzi But your government invented the whole grotesque farrago of โregulationโ. It was to camouflage the monstrous creation of monopolies by privatisation of our public services and utilities.
Very nice story. Not sure if congratulations are in order, but well done! Just one thing. What the hell has happened to British farming? Our food self-sufficiency has collapsed, plunging from 80% in the early 80s to a pathetic 60% today. My guess is itโs the loss of govt intervention. All those sensible dull decent marketing boards, price supports, subsidies, etc. Even the most starey-eyed free market zealot canโt really believe itโs fine for UK to slump back into being the worldโs third biggest food importer.
@Fahadnaimb@DCBMEP Wonderful vision. Propaganda based on fact. I have always regarded the Arsenal of Democracy with awe. Baffling question: why did America throw away its magnificent industrial heritage? Those neocons who subverted the Republic in the 1980s/90s have so much to answer for.
Why did you allow the rotting away of our great oil refining industry, one of this countryโs major post-war industrial achievements? It could have been prevented by one simple measure. When North Sea Oil came fully on stream UK refiners should have had first call on ALL crude production. As in the US and other major free market oil-producing economies. Having, as now, to import most of our diesel, aviation fuel and other products would have been unthinkable.
