The Government has approved the proposal for the Report on Finnish Foreign and Security Policy. The report assesses Finland’s foreign and security policy environment and defines Finland’s objectives and priorities for the next few years.

Naisten ja tyttöjen oikeudet ovat läpileikkaava prioriteetti Suomen ulkopolitiikassa. Seksuaali- ja sukupuolittuneen väkivallan ehkäisy ja sen poistaminen on keskeinen osa tätä työtä.

Kävin tänään hyvän keskustelun tästä tärkeästä aiheesta Suomessa vierailevan YK:n pääsihteerin erityisedustaja Pramila Pattenin kanssa. Pattenin työ keskittyy konflikteihin liittyvään seksuaalisen väkivallan todentamiseen, ennaltaehkäisyyn ja väkivallan vastaiseen työhön. Pattenin mukaan hänen työnsä koskettaa tällä hetkellä n. 600 miljoonaa naista ja lasta, kattaen 21 konfliktia. Hurjia lukuja. Esimerkkeinä keskustelussamme nousi esille tilanteet Ukrainassa sekä Israelissa ja Palestiinassa.

Tuki tälle YK:n työlle on tärkeää. Tuomitsemme seksuaalisen väkivallan. Uhreja on tuettava ja tekijät on asetettava vastuuseen. Vahva tuki tasa-arvotyölle tukee myös naisten taloudellista ja poliittista osallistumista ja sitä kautta yhteiskuntien vakautta.

Ensuring women’s & girls’ rights is a powerful tool for building security. Boys & men are key allies in combatting discriminatory social norms and gender stereotypes & ending sexual and gender-based violence. Success in these efforts makes societies more stable and benefits all.

We need women in all peace and security related tasks, at all levels. There is need to identify and address the structural barriers that hinder women’s meaningful participation and the underlying factors of gender inequality.
