Dr. Krishna Ray, West Bengal State University, highlighted @DBTIndia -supported efforts to restore biodiversity in the Indian Sundarbans through ecosystem-based interventions and the application of indigenous plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).

Since 2014, the initiative has successfully restored nearly 65 hectares of degraded non-protected mangrove areas into self-sustaining, multi-species ecosystems, enabling natural regeneration and ecological recovery.

The programme has also facilitated the reintroduction of several rare and threatened mangrove species, including Sundari and other locally declining species, strengthening biodiversity conservation in one of India's most vulnerable coastal landscapes.

To enhance plant resilience and address uneven growth across restoration sites, researchers developed biochar-based formulations containing indigenous mangrove-associated rhizobacteria.

The approach has demonstrated significant potential for supporting long-term mangrove restoration, ecosystem sustainability, and climate resilience in the Sundarbans.
