@martinmbauer Well sir, x^2 - 4 > 0 leads to (x - 2)(x + 2) > 0 and so we are left with (x - 2) > 0 and (x + 2) < 0.

But if x = 1 then (x - 2)(x + 2) < 0
And if x = -1 then (x - 2)(x + 2) < 0

Almost certainly x > 2 and x < - 2, so -2 < x < 2.

@martinmbauer I guess another way to think about this is to set f(x) = x^2 - 4 > 0. We can see geometrically that f(x) < 0 in the in interval (-2,2). So everything outside of that interval is where f(x) > 0. The graph's vertex is (0,-4).

@charlesmurray I believe most of my college friends had IQs hovering around 110-130. They were smart enough to find patterns and solve applied math problems, some coded really well (before AI). I don't know what its like to be around someone who is 160 and above that, its impossible to know.

@Kazanjy lol there is nothing wrong with the Cal States. I have friends who went there and are financially more successful than any humanities grad at my 'flagship' university. Also schools need tuition money to stay afloat, there is no scarcity so stop pretending.

@diviacaroline You know its strange but I've seen the same. Taught an "AP Precal" student over at VarsityTutors how to add 1/2 + 2/5 and how to add 3sqr(3) + 2sqrt(3). Strange how these problems never go away.

I keep seeing these posts about UC Berkeley professors riled up over having to teach fractions to Calculus I students. But I wonder if the problem has more to do with admissions officers accepting students based on feel-good vibes they're getting from reading their essays?
