“Drones Are Taking Over Power Lines! Western Power and National Grid are Leading the Charge! 🚀” 💡

👉 Western Power Drone technology is playing a key role at Western Power, with 24 UAVs purchased for asset inspections, patrols, power line stringing, fault detection, and reporting. 🔍✨ They’re now trialling new ways to use drones, including applying silicone to live insulators to reduce pole top fires, mapping powerlines to accelerate decisions, and installing wildlife deterrent attachments. 🦅⚡ Future plans include using drones to monitor site security and install sensors for real-time transmission line capacity. Over summer, UAVs will play a crucial role, enabling faster monitoring than vehicles or foot patrols to minimise power outages. 🌞🚁

👉 National Grid in the UK, National Grid is utilising drones with thermal cameras and high-zoom lenses to inspect lines and substations. 🔭🎥 This approach reduces risks for engineers by eliminating the need to climb pylons and allows for inspections in hard-to-reach areas. They’re also exploring beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone flights to expand their reach. 🚁👀

👉 APD Global is also leveraging drones and rovers to access unsafe sites, conduct 3D LIDAR scans, assess hot spots, and even perform dawn-to-dusk construction patrols. 🌅🤖 This technology, once dismissed as a novelty, has become essential. During a heatwave-induced energy surge in New South Wales, the battery stepped up to prevent widespread blackouts. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) called on the WSB to supply 96 MWh of energy to the National Electricity Market (NEM), showcasing its critical role in keeping the grid stable under pressure.
