German international footballer @DenizUndav1 Undav has recently become a major source of pride for many #Kurds. He is the son of a Kurdish father from Viranşehir in Turkey and a mother from #Rojava, and he has always been open about his identity. In one interview, when a journalist referred to him as Turkish, he immediately corrected the record and said he is #Kurdish. Undav is also #Yezidi, a pre‑Islamic faith that many Kurds see as part of their ancient cultural heritage. Although some Yezidis in recent years have distanced themselves from a Kurdish identity for various historical and political reasons, Undav identifies clearly as a Kurd who is #Yazidi.
Since last night, his performance has carried special meaning for #Kurdish people. For many, he represents their identity, their struggle, their resilience, and their hope. Kurds have even given him the nickname “Şerê Kurdan,” meaning “The Kurdish Lion.” His presence on the pitch feels like a moment of visibility for a people whose identity has often been denied or marginalized. And every time he celebrates a goal by performing a Kurdish dance, it makes Kurds feel even more seen and even more proud.
A deeper layer of this pride comes from the Kurdish experience itself: millions of Kurds live across the world, yet they still lack both a state of their own and a national team to cheer for. Moments like these resonate so strongly because they fill that void in ways politics never could. These goals become something larger than sport. They offer a sense of being seen, of being acknowledged, and they touch places that ordinary words rarely reach.
Because of all this, many Kurds now find themselves cheering for the German national team @DFB_Team in the #WorldCup final simply because Undav is part of it.
(Please @FIFAWorldCup , stop disabling my tweets when I write about Undav. It is simply news commentary, not copyright infringement. I’m just trying to inform and celebrate a player who means so much to millions of people.)
