Banksy’s “identity” was part of his art. If you accept that the mystery itself was one of his key artistic devices, then Reuters’ “Banksy is Robin Gunningham” investigation doesn’t look like journalism. It looks like splashing paint over the Mona Lisa.
Yes, some of Banksy’s work may have involved illegal acts. That doesn’t mean every outsider has the right to strip away the anonymity that gave those works their meaning. His pieces and his anonymity were a single artwork, not a puzzle for commercial media to solve for clicks.
In my view, the only legitimate way for the mystery to end would have been if Banksy himself chose the timing and the form—putting down the spray can, speaking in his own words, or leaving an autobiography behind. The decision about how his life and work fit together is part of his authorship.
When a news organization plays detective and “unmasks” him against his will, it is not a public service. It is an attack on creative practice itself. And that, to me, is unacceptable.

Banksy's identity has been debated, and closely guarded, for decades. A quest to solve the riddle took Reuters from a bombed-out Ukrainian village to London and downtown Manhattan — and uncovered much more than a name.
