We've been on the road reporting on how small towns in America are being affected by AI.
From a town with a single Flock camera in Upstate NY... to a Mormon community of 4,000 in Utah bracing for the world's biggest data center.
Here's a preview of what's coming up from Soon.
Why is everyone suddenly putting Mario inside GTA and Elden Ring? 👇
It comes down to two things: decompilation and recompilation.
Decompilation is reverse-engineering a game’s compiled binary back into source code humans can actually understand and modify. Historically, that took an absurd amount of manual work. AI can now speed up huge parts of that process.
But for recompliation, the game’s original machine instructions get translated into code that can run on modern hardware. AI can then help make sense of those instructions, debug the translation, and fill in the gaps.
Newer models are also getting surprisingly good at reasoning through binaries and low-level code. Mods, ports, decomp projects, and recomp projects are getting much easier and faster to make.
If this continues, a lot of old game software could become inspectable and modifiable, even if the original source code was never even released.
We look forward to playing Diddy Kong NBA 2K Dr. Mario
