Fascinating paper from @apples_dan et al! Critically endangered regent honeyeaters sing simplified songs, reducing their reproductive success. As these songs have become more common, though, a frequency bias has kicked in and they are becoming attractive: https://t.co/p2hXR9oUy0
The Regent Honeyeater is so rare its love song is at risk of being lost forever. But there’s new hope the critically endangered bird can be brought back from the edge of extinction through science, tech and a whole lot of human love.

As a Hymenopterist, finding a nesting agg. of Homalictus bees in my frontyard was beyond exciting! As a Mutilliologist, finding an undescribed sp. of mutillid parasitising said aggregation was beyond-beyond! Look at how they take turns guarding the nest-entrance between flight 😍
@WaspGoblin@ke_cain@kateumbers WarbleR is a pretty neat package that works nicely start to finish if songs have high signal to noise ratio. The python software chipper from creanza lab is really handy for syllable segmentation and produces nice syllable and duration analysis that can be played with!
Haven’t been able to do fieldwork for some time now, but I did get a chance to look through some photos of my last visit to Tas with @WaspGoblin. Shame about the low light on the pink robin
