Who is Dr. Henry Claassen?
Dr. Henry Claassen is an associate professor at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, University of California Irvine School of Medicine, and is the principal investigator in a multi-university collaboration to study retinal reconstruction using stem cells.
Dr. Claassen's long-term research focuses on using regenerative strategies to treat diseases of the retina, optic nerve, and retinal pigment epithelium, the layer of pigmented cells next to the retina that nourishes the visual cells in the retina.
Dr. Claassen and his team are studying methods of cell regeneration through stem cell transplantation and tissue engineering.
His team is also studying ways to protect the retina and optic nerve from damage, and is currently conducting research on pigs to develop stem cell transplants in the retina to replace diseased or damaged cells.
Dr. Henry Claassen completed his medical training at Cambridge Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, and obtained his doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh.
