@NWC_DTP AHRC Funded PhD project looking at human-salmon relations, prehistoric subsistence & climate change on the Pacific Coast of North America @livAncWorlds
This month I'm happy to give a hand to PhD student @archaeoMarghe who works on reconstructing past and present #ecology of Pacific Salmon. Exciting project @archaeoSalmon, investigating subsistence behaviours of prehistoric populations in Alaska! ๐๐ #archaeology#climatechange
Cleaning and sampling modern #salmon reference specimens ahead of #geometricmorphometrics analysis - The modern specimens will comstitute the baseline against which ancient samples will be identified to species @archaeoSalmon
Chum update: managed to wire the spines together to keep the vertebrae in correct anatomical order. They are now soaking in hot water to get rid of the initial "dirt"
We finally got some chums to include in the #geometricmorphometrics study - They did come with a bit of extra bits though ๐ Now to clean the spines properly in the next few days
When your chum #salmon reference samples come back from Alaska extra juicy and need to be sort into individuals and cleaned ๐ฑ๐คฏ Joys of research #zooarchaeology#phdlife
PS: Managed to separate the individuals - they'll go in their bath tomorrow
Celebrating International Women's Day by testing and gathering all my equipment ahead of my 3 weeks #salmon data collection and stable isotope analysis trip to the University of Aberdeen starting Monday ๐ #zooarchaeology#PhDlife#WomenInScience
Today we are experimenting camera set ups and lighting in order to build a suitable camera box for photographing samples and optimising the digitisation of our vertebrae for #gmm analysis
I tested digital microscope photography today on a Plaice reference sample. This technique can have great applications on #salmon vertebrae to further refine our #geometricmorphometrics species identification protocols
Had the amazing opportunity to attend a demo for the new #keyence digital microscope (vhx-6000) today @LivAncWorlds. Got some great resolution on the morphological features and growth rings of this tiny Plaice caudal vertebra. Salmon next? @NWC_DTP@archaeoSalmon
aaaaaand we're live! The official #Yearofthesalmon website has been launched!! ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐

South of the border, Yurok Nation has just completed a major restoration of the South Fork Trinity River to help Chinook salmon. https://t.co/GFMll9UwQT #indigenousleadership#wildsalmon
Another Thursday morning, another standard tupperware full of fish bones. Couldn't get my hands on any salmon for today's microscope testing, but this gorgeous Plaice will still provide us with an idea of scale for digitising smaller specimens ๐๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ป
First project meeting with the team @LivAncWorlds, launching this #phd project in style. Stay tuned to find out more about Pacific #salmon! Updates will be running up your stream in the next few months ๐
What does a healthy salmon river look like? See this Russian stronghold river make a comeback from past mining pollution: https://t.co/yYlqNZ8uWa

We helped to develop Google's new Dataset Search tool that let's you find online datasets super easily. Give it a go! https://t.co/3OHrHC5990 @RAL_Space_STFC@STFC_Matters @beisgovuk @UKRI_News
