It is painful to see young students from different parts of the country assembled for days on the streets of New Delhi. Their anxieties and concerns regarding the examination system are genuine and must be handled with empathy and a desire to find a lasting solution. I fervently hope that this is not treated merely as a law-and-order issue to be tackled through the use of force. It is very painful to see that even young girls were brutally mishandled.
Such use of force shall alienate large sections of Indian society from the national goal of Viksit Bharat.

यह देखना अत्यन्त पीड़ादायक है कि देश के विभिन्न भागों से आए युवा छात्र कई दिनों से नई दिल्ली की सड़कों पर एकत्रित हैं। उनकी चिंताएँ और सरोकार वास्तविक हैं। इन्हें सहानुभूति तथा दूरगामी समाधान की दृष्टि से हल किया जाना चाहिए। मुझे पूरी आशा है कि इसे केवल कानूनी और व्यवस्था की समस्या के रूप में नहीं देखा जाएगा जिससे बलपूर्वक निपटा जाये। मुझे य़ह देखकर अत्यन्त पीड़ा हुई है कि महिलाओं और युवतियों पर निर्मम बल प्रयोग किया गया।
ऐसे बल के उपयोग से भारतीय समाज का बड़ा हिस्सा विकसित भारत के लक्ष्य से बहुत दूर चला जाएगा।

Jawaharlal Nehru remembers his days in Cambridge as:

"Three years I was at Cambridge, three quiet years with little of disturbance in them, moving slowly on like the sluggish Cam. They were pleasant years, with many friends and some work and some play and a gradual widening of the intellectual horizon. I took the natural sciences tripos, my subjects being chemistry, geology, and botany, but my interests were not confined to these.

Many of the people I met at Cambridge or during the vacations in London or elsewhere talked learnedly about books and literature and history and politics and economics. I felt a little at sea at first in this semi highbrow talk, but I read a few books and soon got the hang of it and could at least keep my end up and not betray too great an ignorance on any of the usual subjects. So we discussed Nietzsche (he was all the rage in Cambridge then) and Bernard Shaw's prefaces and the latest book by Lowes Dickinson.

From 1907 onward for several years India was seething with unrest and trouble. For the first time since the Revolt of 1857, India was showing fight and not submitting tamely to foreign rule. The Indians in Cambridge had a society called the "Majlis." We discussed political problems there often but in somewhat unreal debates. More effort was spent in copying parliamentary and the University Union style and mannerisms than in grappling with the subject.

I left Cambridge after taking my degree in 1910. I was only moderately successful in my science tripos examination, obtaining second class honors. For the next two years I hovered about London. "

मित्रों और साथियों,

हमारे जीवन से रोशनी चली गई है और चारों ओर अंधेरा छा गया है। मुझे नहीं पता कि मैं आपको क्या कहूँ और कैसे बताऊँ। हमारे प्रिय नेता, जिन्हें हम बापू कहते थे, राष्ट्रपिता, अब हमारे बीच नहीं रहे। शायद यह कहना गलत हो। फिर भी, हम उन्हें फिर कभी उस रूप में नहीं देख पाएंगे जैसे हमने उन्हें इतने वर्षों तक देखा था।

हम उनसे सलाह लेने और उनसे सांत्वना पाने के लिए उनके पास नहीं जा सकेंगे, और यह एक बहुत बड़ा आघात है, न केवल मेरे लिए, बल्कि इस देश के लाखों-करोड़ों लोगों के लिए। इस आघात को कम करने के लिए मैं या कोई और जो सलाह दे, वह भी मुश्किल है।

मैंने कहा, प्रकाश बुझ गया है और फिर भी मैं गलत था, क्योंकि इस देश में चमकने वाला प्रकाश कोई साधारण प्रकाश नहीं था। जिस प्रकाश ने इतने वर्षों तक इस देश को रोशन किया है, वह आने वाले कई वर्षों तक इसे रोशन करता रहेगा।
