@jbanningww1 It’s terrible, and it’s so casual now that it hardly makes the news. The rapid decline of simple decency is so scary, here and abroad. The usual pathetic suspects will squabble like rats for what’s left after Orange Don goes - or worse deny they ever supported it.
@wtbattlefields Leonard Shipway played football for Yate and had amateur trials for Aston Villa in Apr 1914. One of 150+ men who joined the 4th Glosters on 1st Sep 1914. He was wounded in Aug 1916 but survived, and later played football for Wickwar and captained Churchill & Blakedown Golf Club.
@jbanningww1 Completely agree. I think Bethell and Brook dismissals were equally bad. Yes Brook scored a ton but 98 balls is not a long innings and he should’ve shown more grit to make sure it was him and Root to the end on a tricky pitch. I don’t see a lot of responsibility in his batting.
@TheCricketerMag@GeorgeDobell1@melindafarrell#askgeorge Great end to a great series but should England have even been in that position? Very poor dismissals from Brook + Bethell yesterday. I’d like to have seen Brook dig in more. 98 balls is not a long innings and he should’ve shown more responsibility to see it through.
@dizzernp@QMGS191418 I believe Lance-Corporal was an appointment rather than substantive rank, and could be paid or unpaid. Same with Lance-Serjeant. You often see on service records “appointed L/Cpl”; “promoted Cpl”. The appointment doesn’t always translate over to official records.
@truesome88 @GenXGirl1994@SenTomCotton So you’re saying a foreign militia with no stable political infrastructure has ‘infiltrated’ every single college/university in the US, yet it’s unfathomable that one of the most powerful nations on earth that’s trying to pulverise them into dust has had no influence on anything.
@QMGS191418 Which one do you think might be Norman? I have quite a few others of the 5th by Hack and others, none that I can directly connect to Campden but let me know if you’d be interested in a couple of scans as someone may jump out to you.
We’ve enjoyed a fabulous day remembering L/Cpl Fred Room VC at his former #Bristol home where a @BristolCivicSoc blue plaque was unveiled. Photos on this link plus a detailed look at this remarkable man’s life. Please do RT as it’s been a lot of work!

It's not just that Trump won. It's that Joe Rogan, Dana White and Brett Favre won. Jailed insurrectionists won. The Alitos and the Thomases won. Vladimir Putin won. Racism won. Misogyny won. Sexism won. Global warming won. Xenophobia won. Most of all: Fear Won. That's what hurts.
Can’t thank Jeremy and Clive enough for the past few days. I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating trip. They put so much work and expertise into giving their groups a fantastic, memorable experience. I learnt so much but only scratched the surface. Looking forward to going again!
Well, almost back in Bristol after this year’s Western Front Footsteps tour. It’s been an absolute joy with such a lovely group. I’ll post some more photos in the next few days.
@jbanningww1 Three days later Harold Stenner was wounded in the head by a rifle shot around 7.30am on the 30th April - a particularly foggy morning. He died the next day after the battalion had rotated back to billets.
@jbanningww1 The Rev. G.F. Helm wrote to Badman’s mother telling her of the incident which caused her son’s death, finishing the letter “I buried him this evening, the colonel, adjutant, and many of the men of the regiment being present. He died for his country and for his religion.”
