Waymo CEO Dmitri Dolgov on emergent behaviors he's seen from AI:
"I've had some moments where a car does something and I look at the log and have been surprised. It does things that I didn't think it was capable of doing."
"When you build a system and you think you understand how it works and you understand fully the limits of its capability and performance, and then it does something—almost magical—it's exhilarating."
"One example I can give you... it happened in San Francisco, fairly benign situation. We're at an intersection, the light is red, and there's cross traffic. A bus goes by and stops, partially blocking our light. The light turns green. We start to go, nudging around the bus—and then you see a pedestrian being detected on the other side of the bus."
"The first time I looked at that log, I was like, 'What's going on here?'"
"We have pretty darn good sensors and the software is very capable, but we don't see through stuff."
"What actually turned out was happening was that our peripheral lidars bounced under the bus, and there was just a little bit of very noisy reflection of the movement of the person's feet—that was enough for the AI models to say, 'Likely, there's a pedestrian there.'"
"There was enough data there to predict what they were going to do. It kinda blew my mind."

Assuming Waymo-equivalent self-driving cars "win", it will be equivalent to curing all breast cancer in the US, twice-over.
Self-driving cars are absolutely the most important pro-social technological development in decades
This is literally death by paperwork.
Every day AV innovation is delayed by unnecessary political obstructionism via endless studies and other paperwork requirements is another day many lives will be lost that could have been saved.
.@SecDuffy holds the first autonomous vehicle safety forum: "Here at @USDOT, we want to make sure we have the right regulatory structure to meet the innovation that’s happening... We don't want to see these as Chinese-made, Chinese technology. We want American technology."
California is the leader in making streets safer by allowing autonomous vehicles. @GavinNewsom has wisely rejected organized labor's anti-safety posture.
Sadly some candidates for CA governor are letting labor bully them to oppose autonomous vehicles.
The United States strongly rejects @EmmanuelMacron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the @UN general assembly.
This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th.
@SenMarkKelly Jolani’s goons are slaughtering Syrian Christians and Druze by the hundreds, yet Mark Kelly thinks the “crisis” is that Israel is trying to feed people while Hamas simultaneously tries to kill them.
During a Congressional hearing this morning, AVIA CEO @JeffFarrah urged lawmakers to pass a federal #autonomousvehicle policy framework that will allow the continued growth of America’s AV industry and ensure we retain leadership over China in a vital emerging tech.

.@tedcruz is right.
Republicans back Israel because it's in our interest to support an ally against our common enemy.
Iran has killed many Americans. Iran tried to assassinate POTUS. Iran was racing towards a nuclear bomb.
Iran is America's enemy too.
ICYMI: Last week, AVIA CEO @JeffFarrah spoke at the California Department of Motor Vehicles hearing on proposed #AutonomousVehicle regulations:
"We appreciate the DMV and CHP's work toward authorizing autonomous trucks, but it is our view that these regulations heavily focus on the past, not the future. A more flexible, practical, and less burdensome regulatory approach is essential for the many benefits of AVs to be brought to California for years to come."
Israel and the United States have been united, including in our shared insistence that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. President Trump and his Administration have worked tirelessly to ensure that outcome. Unfortunately, Iran has refused to agree and even declared yesterday its intent to build a new enrichment facility.
Israel decided it needed to take action to defend itself. They were clearly within their right to do so.
Iran will face grave consequences if it responds by unjustifiably targeting U.S. interests.
It was an honor to meet with Secretary @SeanDuffyWI alongside other AV leaders to discuss the importance of driverless trucks to America’s economic future, and the criticality of a federal AV policy framework that will enable the safe deployment of AVs. Thank you to @JeffFarrah, @arielswolf, and @theavindustry for your dedication to safety and improving mobility.
