I don't think our Indian filmmakers know exactly what the #IMAX format and it's purpose is. We've been getting scammed since the last couple of years in the name of IMAX releases.

For the unversed, let me explain,
IMAX is an immersive film format which is screened on a screen that is close to 10x larger than a normal screen and has an aspect ratio of either 1:43:1 (which covers up the entire screen) or 1:90:1 (which covers up about 75-80% of the screen), which kinda makes us feel like everything is happening right in front of us (when watched from the right position and seat).

Normal movies are shot in 2:39:1 aspect ratio or 1:80:1 aspect ratio, which are letterboxed formats. A reference image for all the formats are given below.

Most IMAX movies are filmed (some are filmed in normal AR and then converted to the IMAX ratio, which I don't think is such a good process) and screened in the 1:90:1 ratio while some specific movies like Dune 2 and Oppenheimer were filmed in the 1:43:1 aspect ratio, which is even bigger.

What's happening in India is, our films are all shot in the 2:39:1 ratio, irrespective of the film format. Then, the makers send out the same AR print to both IMAX and non-IMAX screens. Hence, what we get in an IMAX screen for Indian films is the same 2:39:1 AR film on a huge screen which just gives you the picture on half the screen while the other half of the screen is just big, black bars.

I am a person who watched #Oppenheimer FDFS in IMAX and that film had the 1:43:1 full-screen IMAX ratio and it was BEAUTIFUL to watch.

In October, Lokesh Kanagaraj announced that Leo will be releasing in IMAX. So, naturally as a movie-lover I was excited to watch it on a bigger screen with more visuals. I went in for the FDFS in IMAX and was disappointed when the film was presented in the normal AR with black bars. They didn't even give it to us in the 1:90:1 AR.
The next week, I went to watch #Leo again, this time in non-IMAX and confirmed that there I was getting the exact same thing without the black bars. No bigger visuals, nothing.

Then, 2 months later, in December, I watched #Dune2 which had the 1:43:1 AR. So once again, I got the actual IMAX experience.

Since then, a handful of Indian films have come and gone in the IMAX format and every single one of them have been screened in the same way, with black bars.

Last week, I went to watch #Kalki2898AD which I expected to have a proper IMAX AR as it was made on a 600 CR something budget and yet again, I was disappointed to see it being screened in the same 2:39:1 AR.

Now, Indian 2 is out there which is first of all a bad film and on top of that it's occupying all the IMAX screens while having the 2:39:1 ratio and at the same time there's #DespicableMe4 playing in theatres which has fantastic 3D and also that 1:43:1 IMAX ratio, but that's not getting a single IMAX show because of Indian 2, which is unfair, because ultimately IMAX screens are made to show films made for that format specifically.

Now, even Thangalaan has confirmed an IMAX release.

It's not fun when you're spending a fortune already for that format and on top of that theatre owners increase ticket prices drastically and then you get the same shit on a bigger screen when you can watch the exact same thing on a normal screen for a much lesser price, which saves your money by a huge margin.
