The Indian Air Force pays solemn tribute to Flt Lt Alfred Tyrone Cooke, VrC (Retd), decorated fighter pilot and hero of the 1965 Indo-Pak War, whose last rites were held in New Delhi today.

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Vice Chief of the Air Staff, and Air Marshal George Thomas, AOC-in-C, Western Air Command, paid homage on behalf of the Indian Air Force.

Flying the Hawker Hunter with No. 14 Squadron, Flt Lt Cooke displayed exceptional courage during the aerial engagement over Kalaikunda on 07 Sep 1965, shooting down an enemy F-86 Sabre despite being outnumbered. For his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, he was awarded the Vir Chakra.

His valour and service to the Nation will continue to inspire generations of Air Warriors.

Flight Lieutenant Alfred Cooke (r) was in our studio on Wednesday, visiting from Australia. The one hour interview which airs on #CtrlAltDefence this evening is the finest description of one of the most legendary dogfights of the jet era - Alfred took on 4 Pakistani Sabres, downing two during the 1965 war over Kalaikunda. He was lucid, strong, passionate as always in what he said. We sincerely hope this account - an extraordinarily detailed one - goes a long way towards reopening the file on whether he should be honoured with a Param Vir Chakra. I can't think of a more fit case.

Most folks don’t fully realise that the probability of not coming back from such a flight for the pilots is more than a safe return. Next time in an airshow near you, try if you can get a glimpse of the Cheetah’s cockpit. A Maruti Swift dashboard has more components on it.

And yet, our warriors go on and on. Probably landed back, made a good night call home & went to sleep, woke up today for business as usual. Probably both pilots in their late twenties or thirties. Unreal commitment to duty & professionalism. Indian Army for you.
