In 1942 on this date in #RadioHistory, actress and inventor, Hedy Lamarr received her patent for Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) communications systems. This was the foundation for many applications in military and civilian sectors, to include: WIFI, Bluetooth, CDMA Cellular communications, and signals used in GPS systems.

Today the Church remembers Clare of Assisi who died on this day in 1253. Inspired by Francis of Assisi, she fled an arranged marriage to dedicate herself to God, founding the Poor Clares, an order committed to poverty, prayer, and service. Facing fierce opposition from her family and societal norms, Clare’s conviction led her to create a community that embodied compassion and humility.
"O God, your blessed Son became poor for our sake, and chose the Cross over the kingdoms of this world: Deliver us from an inordinate love of worldly things, that we, inspired by the devotion of your servant Clare, may seek you with singleness of heart, behold your glory by faith, and attain to the riches of your everlasting kingdom, where we shall be united with our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen."

Today the Church remembers reformer and prolific hymn writer, John Mason Neale.
Neale’s uniqueness lies in his multifaceted contributions as a hymnologist, translator, ecclesiologist, and social reformer, combined with his perseverance despite opposition and chronic illness.
His translations, such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel", "All Glory, Laud, and Honour", and "Jerusalem the Golden", are still widely sung in Christian worship today. His most famous original hymn was "Good King Wenceslas" (1853). Neale was an accomplished linguist, reportedly fluent in 20 languages, which allowed him to translate hymns and liturgical texts with precision and artistry. His ability to render Greek and Latin hymns into English while maintaining their poetic structure was remarkable.
"O God, by your grace your servant John Mason Neale, kindled by the flame of your love, became a burning and shining light in your Church, turning pride into humility and error into truth: Grant that we may be set aflame with the same spirit of love and discipline, and walk before you as children of light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen."

The P8085AH is an 8-bit, 5MHz microprocessor from Intel, introduced in March 1976 (for $4.40 ea.) as an enhanced version of the Intel 8080. It was a high-performance variant with improved clock speeds and power efficiency compared to the original 8085. This was the last 8-bit microprocessor developed by Intel before transitioning to the 16-bit 8086/8088 family. Early microcomputers, such as the TRS-80 Model 100 used this CPU. A radiation-hardened version was used into the 1990s and 2000s for NASA missions, including the Sojourner Mars Rover.

“The pursuit of happiness” doesn’t mean today what it meant in the 1700s when our Declaration of Independence was crafted. Today it means the pursuit of feeling good. Back then it meant the pursuit of becoming good.
I recommend Jeffrey Rosen’s book “The Pursuit of Happiness” for more detail.
John Adams, in his 1776 Thoughts on Government, wrote: “Upon this point all speculative politicians will agree, that the happiness of society is the end of government, as all Divines and moral Philosophers will agree that the happiness of the individual is the end of man. From this principle it will follow, that the form of government, which communicates ease, comfort, security, or in one word happiness to the greatest number of people, and in the greatest degree, is the best. All sober inquirers after truth, ancient and modern, pagan and Christian, have declared that the happiness of man, as well as his dignity, consists in virtue.”

Today is National Purple Heart Day.
Originally created as the "Badge of Military Merit" by General George Washington on August 7, 1782, the Purple Heart is the nation's oldest military decoration. Reintroduced in 1932 on the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, over 1.9 million Purple Hearts have been awarded to service members. It is ranked immediately behind the Bronze Star Medal and ahead of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and is one of the most recognized and respected honors awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Is Amateur Radio irrelevant?
Recent disasters, such as the flooding in North Carolina, demonstrate when needed amateur radio connects people. It provides a reliable backup during emergencies when modern systems fail. It also fosters technical skill development, local and global community building, and innovation, such as satellite communication. Enthusiasts continue to adapt, integrating digital modes (e.g. email and text w/o internet) and exploring new frequencies, ensuring its enduring value. With no morse code requirement, it’s never been easier to obtain a license and to have a communications solution for our next “bad day”. Prepare now.
