None of this is satire.
→ A company spent $500,000,000 on Claude in one month because nobody set usage limits
→ Uber ran leaderboards ranking engineers by how much AI they used, not what they shipped
→ Uber burned their entire 2026 budget by April. Their COO said he can’t connect any of it to consumer features
→ A CTO told Axios employees were using enterprise AI to check the weather
→ Microsoft canceled most Claude Code licenses because the token bill spiraled
→ Companies are now laying people off to pay the AI bill. Not because AI replaced the work. Because the bill replaced the headcount.
BYD just unveiled an electric car that can charge from 10 to 70 percent in five minutes, and all the way in nine
More proof that EVs are going to dominate the future, just a question of how long it takes — and who will build them

This map shows the number of dentists per 10,000 residents in Europe. The stereotype of British people having bad teeth is mirrored in the low number of dentists per capita. Is there a stereotype regarding Swedish teeth?! HT @Maps_interlude
In the last few years, St Paul enacted rent control.
Meanwhile, nearby Minneapolis made it easier to build.
Guess which one saw a boom in new contraction, and which saw a decline by 79%.
Even without rent control, rents in Minneapolis went up less.
When will we learn?
I guesstimate this would release capacity for >2 million homes in the London & SE green belt near stations, plus capacity for 20 million or more homes in gardens in that region. If it went through, then the UK would no longer have a shortage of planning permissions.
This will be a tough weekend for the Chancellor. She knew almost six weeks before the Budget from the OBR there was no ‘black hole’. Yet she and the Treasury still stoked up the idea that there was — and it would take big tax rises to fill it.
By Oct 31 she knew from the OBR there was actually £4bn headroom rather than a black hole. Yet still on Nov 5th she commandeered breakfast media to roll the pitch for big tax rises.
Even by mid-November she was telling the BBC if Labour stuck to its manifesto commitments (ie no income tax rises) she’d need deep cuts to capital investment.
None of what she said in the run up to the Budget was true. The Treasury select committee needs to ask her why she so misled the Parliament, the markets and the British people.
She raised taxes to give herself some more headroom and to pay for yet another increase in (largely welfare) spending.
The tax burden is going to all-time record level for a simple reason: the Labour manifesto said public spending would be around £10bn higher than Tory plans by 2028/29. In reality on the latest projections it will be £179bn higher!!! Nothing to do with filling in black holes.
“If women are behind on a metric, it’s recorded as inequality. If men are behind, it’s recorded as parity. You read that correctly: The index is explicitly designed so that men cannot be seen as disadvantaged, no matter how far behind they fall.”

The Renters Act tribunal system is *insane*.
1⃣Any rent increase can be brought to tribunal.
2⃣No rent increase can occur until tribunal decides.
3⃣Tribunals are forbidden from saying rent should be higher than the Landlord.
4⃣ There are only *34* tribunal judges in the country. For five million rental properties.
💣There is zero risk in demanding a tribunal.
💣There is no incentive to *not* take landlords to tribunal over any rent increase.
💣There is every incentive to bring any rent increase to tribunal, even if simply to clog up the system and avoid paying through delay.
🤡The bill's authors might not realise it, but they have accidentally introduced an extreme form of rent control.

This morning as I sat in a London synagogue for Yom Kippur services, a friend sitting next to me said “I reckon Jews have about 10 years left in this country.”
I said I disagreed, and that it’s not as bad as it seems.
About 20 minutes later, the service was suddenly interrupted. A synagogue security official went up to the bimah and said there had been a “major incident” in the north and they were locking down the synagogue. There was a buzz of fear. Children’s services were canceled. We were not to leave.
My friend looked at me, and said, “You see what I mean. 10 years.”
In 2025, two Jews were murdered for the crime of praying in a synagogue in Britain.
Truth is, I don’t know a single Jewish family in London who doesn’t speak openly and often about leaving. These are dyed in the wool Brits, who love this country. But they are watching the England they know disintegrate around them.
British Jews have lost the right to security and safety. The response by authorities to this attack is to pledge more security at Jewish schools and synagogues. They’re just restating the problem.
Why should Jewish kids go to school in London or Manchester under a phalanx of security guards? Why do synagogues need a rotation of specially trained guards at every event? (For what it’s worth not a single police officer showed up at our synagogue after the attack in Manchester. Guess they were busy.)
Jewish parents who pass by secular and non-Jewish parochial schools might gaze in wonder - perhaps envy - at the sight of children entering their schools without six or seven men in stab vests standing guard. And Keir Starmer comes out with his valiant statement “We will defeat antisemitism.” No. They will tolerate it, ally with it, reward its most virulent proponents.
And the most insane part is that I write this with full knowledge that it’s me who might get the knock on my door from the police to ask me about this very tweet, which they find “concerning.”
Tell me how to make sense of it.
With two parents on £50k, take-home pay is £79,000. After childcare and rent, they're left with £24,800.
A family on benefits renting the same house would clear £30,000 after rent with no need for childcare.
You are better off on benefits than on a household income of £100k.
A Free Speech Union (FSU) member was arrested in an early-morning raid after criticising his former employer in a private Facebook group, then placed under “Orwellian” bail conditions barring him from even revealing the arrest. Following legal intervention supported by the FSU, the extraordinary “gagging clause” has now been overturned at a special court hearing.

Postgres 18 is bringing a major performance improvement: async io.
This uses the Linux io_uring interface to make table scans, bitmap heap scans, and VACUUM operations leverage async io, greatly speeding up these operations.
pganalyse has a great article on this (link below)
Spain’s Minister of Transportation, Oscar Puente, is defending Vueling Airlines and referring to the 50 Jewish teenagers kicked off the flight as “Israeli brats.”
Guess what, Oscar? They’re not Israeli. They’re French. But when you’re blinded by hate, facts don’t matter.
Instead of investigating discrimination, Puente is doubling down and calling on “Spanish patriots” to stand with the airline.
Turning antisemitism into a political rallying cry takes a special kind of shamelessness.
THE VUELING FIASCO JUST GETS WORSE AND WORSE FOR THE JEW-HATING AIRLINE
The big bad offence, was one kid, who said a single word in Hebrew — loud enough to be heard.
That's all it took for the crew to call the Gestapo.
My name is Hebrew. Good thing I'm never flying @vueling.
