Tonight I had the honor of taking my dad, Bijan (we call him Beej) as my date to a White House reception with President Biden for new Members of Congress — as a gift for his 70th birthday.

My dad immigrated to the United States to study engineering at the University of Oregon. He grew up in a working class family in Iran, and spent the first summer in the US cleaning dorm rooms to make extra money. After graduating, he spent 17 years working at the public works department of a county in Washington State. Later in life, he worked himself through business school at nights and started his own company. If that’s not the American Dream, I don’t know what is.

What I hate most about politics is the amount of lies I’ve had to endure about my family and our story. I’m so proud to have the hardest working parents who sacrificed everything — fleeing a brutal, theocratic regime during their home country’s revolution — to give their future kids a better life and opportunity. My dad is the most patriotic American I know, and I’m so grateful he encouraged me to pursue my lifelong passion for public service.

On top of that, he’s my best friend, my biggest supporter, and the funniest person I’ve ever known. Happy birthday Beej. Thank you for everything ❤️

@josephpowell Well done Joe. My family had this experience in California last year, and it was a blessing. The rules here are very similar to those in the bill before Parliament. They work, and they are humane. Many families will be better able to make decisions thoughtfully & with dignity.
