The Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru contain a fascinating episode that sheds light on Nehru’s priorities in the years immediately after Independence.
On 12 December 1948, Nehru wrote to Finance Minister John Matthai regarding the enormous income-tax assessments issued against Butcher Suhrawardy, the former Premier of Bengal. Suhrawardy had complained to Nehru that he was being assessed for nearly ₹50 lakh in taxes for 1945-46 and 1946-47 and alleged that the Income Tax Department was harassing him.
Rather than leaving the matter entirely to the tax authorities, Nehru intervened. He forwarded Suhrawardy’s grievances to Matthai and cautioned that any “high-handed” action could have serious political repercussions. On the very same day, Nehru also wrote to West Bengal Chief Minister Dr. B.C. Roy, describing the assessment as “extraordinary” and seeking further information.
This was not an ordinary taxpayer. Suhrawardy remains one of the most controversial figures of the pre-Independence era, remembered for his role as Premier of Bengal during Direct Action Day in Calcutta in 1946, which unleashed horrific communal violence.
Yet Nehru’s concern was not merely the tax assessment itself, but the broader political consequences that could follow from the government’s treatment of such a prominent Muslim leader.
What happened next is equally noteworthy. Suhrawardy eventually left India, disposed of his interests here, moved to Pakistan, and went on to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The episode raises an important historical question: Why was India’s Prime Minister personally intervening in a tax dispute involving a politician who would later lead a country that had been created through Partition?
The correspondence survives in the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru and offers a revealing glimpse into how political considerations often intersected with governance in the Nehru era.

The West Bengal Budget 2026–27 marks a decisive break from the Trinamool model of governance and lays the foundation for a developed, equitable and progressive Bengal.
With a historic outlay of ₹4,38,775 crore, the budget combines fiscal responsibility with an ambitious development agenda. The budget projects a reduction in key fiscal indicators, with the revenue deficit estimated at 1.02% of GSDP, the fiscal deficit at 2.91%, and the debt stock at 37.98% of GSDP. These projections signal a commitment to fiscal consolidation even as the government continues to manage an inherited debt burden of over ₹8.15 lakh crore.
More importantly, this is a budget focused on outcomes, not optics.
It prioritises the sectors that matter most for Bengal’s future: 35% for infrastructure development, 17% for education and skill development, 12% for health and wellness, 11% for agriculture and rural prosperity, and 10% for industry, MSMEs and employment generation.
The flagship allocations reflect this commitment:
🔹 ₹36,000 crore for Annapurna Yojana, empowering women and strengthening household incomes.
🔹 ₹14,000 crore for VB-GRAM G, creating employment opportunities in rural Bengal.
🔹 ₹13,000 crore for PMAY-G, enabling the construction of 25 lakh rural homes.
🔹 ₹11,000 crore for the Teesta Barrage Project, enhancing irrigation and agricultural productivity.
🔹 ₹10,000 crore through SASCI, leveraging capital support from the Centre.
🔹 ₹5,000 crore for the West Bengal Investment Promotion Framework, aimed at attracting investment and creating jobs.
🔹 ₹4,100 crore for the Lower Sundarban SHORE Project, strengthening resilience and regional development.
🔹 ₹3,100 crore for AB-PMJAY, ensuring universal health coverage.
🔹 ₹2,100 crore for PM-SHRI schools, investing in quality education.
🔹 ₹2,000 crore for the Bakreshwar Mega Floating Solar Project, advancing Bengal’s clean-energy future.
The contrast with the Trinamool years could not be sharper. Bengal suffered from policy drift, dwindling industrial confidence, poor infrastructure creation and a politics that prioritised slogans over solutions. Welfare became a substitute for development instead of complementing it.
This budget restores that balance. It recognises that social welfare and economic growth are not competing priorities. A truly progressive Sonar Bangla requires both, security for the vulnerable and opportunity for the aspirational.
The people of Bengal deserve not just bigger budgets but better outcomes. Roads built, industries established, investments attracted, jobs created, farmers empowered and lives transformed.
This budget is a marked improvement over the Trinamool regime and a significant step towards building the prosperous, confident and aspirational Bengal that its people deserve.
This ex-cop was the OC of Barabani police station in Asansol area. He was already suspended last year in a separate corruption case and had been dodging ED summons for months.
During questioning, he couldn't explain suspicious money trails linked to the coal mafia. ED says he helped move illicit funds in the smuggling racket.
Looks like the net is tightening on those who were supposed to stop this mess but joined in instead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often said that India's engagement with the world must be guided by both national interest and the timeless principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Over the past 12 years, this vision has shaped a foreign policy that has strengthened India's partnerships, expanded its global outreach and given Bharat a stronger voice in international affairs.
Today, India is engaging with the world from a position of greater confidence and capability. Guided by the idea of Bharat as a Vishwa Bandhu, India's approach has focused on building partnerships, creating opportunities and contributing to solutions for shared global challenges. Through initiatives such as Neighbourhood First, Act East and deeper engagement with regions across the world, India has expanded both its diplomatic reach and strategic influence.
As India advances towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, the idea of Vishwa Bandhu continues to guide its engagement with the world. The progress of the last 12 years reflects a nation that is strengthening friendships, expanding opportunities and ensuring that India's voice is heard with greater respect and attention across the world.
