On September 11, 2001, I woke up early in the morning to go over my closing argument that I was about to present in my first trial as a criminal defense attorney. Instead I watched in horror as the South Tower of the WTC collapsed. My college roommate and best man at my wedding, Frank J. Doyle, was inside. I drove to NYC instead of Cambridge District Court and the world changed forever.

It’s now been 24 years and there is rarely a day that goes by that I don’t think of Frank. He was 5’8” tall but a giant among men. He headed the trading desk at Keefe, Bruyette and Woods after setting the record for most games played as a goalie at Bowdoin College.

He was a man of character, a loyal and dependable friend, and perhaps the funniest guy I have ever met. His beautiful children, Zoë and Garrett, were so young, they don’t remember him. His widow, Kimmy, sure does. She lost the love of her life that day and the world lost a special man.

The passage of time really doesn’t make it that much easier, it still hurts. My condolences to all those with similar stories, and to our nation.

Bryan Kohberger killed 4 strangers because he studied criminology and wanted to see if he could get away with murder. He thought he could. He got high off of it. He studied the house for weeks. He planned to attack them at a time when he knew they would be drunk and tired. He changed his license plates. He turned off his phone when he traveled to commit his crimes. He returned to the crime scene 5 hours later to gloat about his work. He thought he had proven to himself that he could indeed kill people and get away with it.

But he left his DNA behind. His car was seen on video. He completely failed.

What's unfortunate is that the families will never feel true closure because BK is incapable of normal human emotions. If I were them I'd want to see him cry. I'd want to see him beg for forgiveness, and then not give it to him. He likely hasn't cried about any of this since he was arrested. The families would feel better if BK is scared and was crying at this sentencing hearing. But he's not. He just sits there like a psychopath. They'll never get the closure they were hoping for.
